As promised, some photos from the AMP. This is basically a time line of pictures from my office, from November to the latest photo taken today.

Sorry, just off my phone.

The completed building on the right is the University Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre - been there for years now. The large building to the rear is the new University Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, and the latest (to the front) is a University Knowledge Centre.

So close to where I live!

Brilliant developments, need the Waverley residential area to come on now, although the vast expanse could be left untouched, something nice and wild in the urban area.

Work begins on new AMRC buildings

Rotherham Business News 3/6/11

Building work has begun on a Knowledge Transfer Centre (KTC) at The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham.

The centre is part of a £40m hub, made possible through the European Regional Development Fund, that will further extend the £100m AMRC partnership that has successfully bridged the gap between academia, industry and government.

In addition, the contract for the construction of an extension to the existing Factory of the Future building has been awarded to ISG.

The extension will provide capacity for an expanded Composite Centre and together the facilities will increase R&D and knowledge transfer activities with regional companies and give them access to world-leading research and state-of-the-art equipment.

The AMRC Knowledge Transfer Centre (pictured above) is being built by BAM Construction and will provide dedicated meeting and training space to engage businesses along the manufacturing supply chain. The eye-catching building, designed by Bond Bryan, is based around a 830 sq m training workshop, where visitors can gain hands-on experience of the new manufacturing, machining and assembly techniques developed at the AMRC.

The building also offers highly flexible meeting and teaching rooms, equipped with the latest presentation and networking technology. The KTC will be able to host conferences of up to 350 people.

The new Composite Centre (pictured below) will enable regional companies to work alongside AMRC researchers during the design and manufacture of their pre-production prototypes, before investing in their own production facilities.

The 3,200 sq m extension will be split into a general workshop and a controlled environment including high-spec clean rooms.

Production equipment will include a large autoclave and oven, and a series of robots to support the centre's research into automating the production of complex composites components.

The Composite Centre is currently based in the original AMRC building which will now be dedicated to the AMRC's fast-growing Advanced Structural Testing Centre (ASTC).

The £25m Nuclear AMRC on the site is also nearing completion.

UK Coal set to bring forward Waverley development
Rotherham Business News 23/8/11

UK Coal are bringing forward the first phase of development at the huge Waverley new community in Rotherham.

The £100m regeneration project on the site of the former Orgreave colliery is the biggest brownfield site development in South Yorkshire and covers 741 acres, an area bigger than Sheffield city centre.

Outline planning permission was granted in 2010 for a self-supporting and sustainable community of 3,800 homes with community facilities such as two primary schools, a medical centre, and sports pitches. A transport interchange and a park & ride is also planned.

In a trading update, UK Coal said that: "Our major development schemes at Waverley and Prince of Wales are attracting interest from a number of developers and housebuilders and we are bringing forward the first phases of development."

In April, the company whose property arm, Harworth Estates is based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Waverley in Rotherham, reported that subject to market conditions, delivery of the Waverley project will commence through a series of phased sales with national house builders.

Recovery plans for UK Coal were put in place in May after they reported a pre-tax loss of £124.6m after a "further year of poor operational performance."

The trading update for the first half of 2011 encouraged the UK Coal board as they posted its first profit in four years. Output rose from 2.7m tonnes to 4.1m tonnes helping to boost profits to £35.2m.

Jonson Cox, chairman of UK Coal, said: "This set of results marks my first six months as Chairman. I am pleased to report on reasonable progress.

"Our focus over the next period is to continue the work towards securing a future which is in the best interests of all stakeholders. Delivering our Strategic Recovery Plan is necessary to ensure the viability of the business. This plan requires the support and cooperation of the entire workforce; an essential element of the group's future."

AMRC planning next centre of excellence

Rotherham Business News 23 January 2012

Quote:
A new UK centre of excellence for industrial design, prototyping and structural testing is being planned for Rotherham.

The University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Institute (AMI) is looking to extend the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing to provide space for designers to explore and research new manufacturing applications under the same ethos as the AMRC.

A 2,700 sq m extension to the existing building would bring together design and prototyping with structural testing, key areas in the research of high-value manufacturing sectors such as aerospace, energy, motorsport and medical technology.

Hi-tech jobs boost moves step nearer

Rolls-Royce has moved one step closer to creating 180 hi-tech aerospace jobs in South Yorkshire after submitting detailed plans to build an Advanced Blade Casting Facility on the Advanced Manufacturing Park.

The 14,300 square metre factory is one of three that the group hopes to build on the site and will make jet engine turbine blades capable of withstanding temperatures of more than 1,900C.

Consultations on the proposals are expected to last until early April, with Rotherham Council due to make a decision around the start of May.

If the council approves the plans - drawn up by Sheffield architects Bond Bryan - work will start soon after and be completed in around a year.

The Advanced Blade Casting Facility is to be built on land beside the existing Advanced Manufacturing Park Technology Centre, across the road from the new Knowledge Transfer Centre.

Rolls-Royce has outline planning permission to build three factories on the Advanced Manufacturing Park.

One of the other factories would be dedicated to making safety critical components for civil nuclear power stations.

Known as Project PoWer, it would initially create a similar number of jobs as the Advanced Blade Casting Facility and could eventually cover 21,000 square metres - the size of almost three football pitches.

The third factory could be occupied by one of Rolls-Royce’s suppliers or the company itself.

Rolls-Royce is understood to have chosen South Yorkshire for its new plants because of the availability of people with the skills it needs, existing links with suppliers from the region and the ease of access to other parts of the UK and the rest of the world.

The company’s existing collaboration with Sheffield University over the creation of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and new Nuclear AMRC.

Two years ago, the company chose the AMP’s new technology incubator, Evolution@theAMP, as the site for a hi-tech facility designing the new generation of aero engine turbine discs, which are being made in Sunderland.

AMRC next phase consultation

If anyone wants a closer look at the plans for the new Design Prototyping and Testing Centre, or the new AMI Training Centre on Waverley, the AMRC is holding a public consultation this Thursday.

It'll be in the MANTRA lorry, parked outside the Catcliffe Morrisons. All welcome!

The housebuilders have reserved matters approval, hence why they are on site.

The two defunct wind turbines are coming down today too.

Just visited the 3 sales cabins near the AMP for housing.

This development will turn out to be disappointing i'm afraid.

Summary:
The housing is just like every other new estate, going against design principles.
The transport interchange is up in the air due to funding, land has been reserved for 8 years.
Transport link road to Woodhouse refused permission.
Show houses to be open in September (latest), with foundations already laid.
First residents to move in December or a bit later.
Phase 1 has been divided into three with different developers.

Housebuilding to begin at last on old mine site

WORK is to begin this summer on the first of thousands of new homes being created on the former Orgeave mining and industrial site.

The 741 acres of land, between Sheffield and Rotherham, are being transformed into a new township called Waverley.

In total, 4,000 houses are being built in phases, with 7,000 jobs created during the construction process.

An initial 250 properties is to be created by Taylor Wimpey Yorkshire, Barratt Homes and Harron Homes - with further homes to be built in a second phase which is expected to begin in 2014.

Taylor Wimpey has named its initial development, off Highfield Spring, Catcliffe, The Banks, in honour of Gordon Banks, goalkeeper in the England 1966 World Cup team. He worked as a coal bagger on the site and also played for the colliery football team.

Ann Bagshaw, Taylor Wimpey Yorkshire’s regional sales and marketing manager, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Barratt Homes and Harron Homes on Harworth Estates’ Waverley development to deliver an exciting new community to the Yorkshire region.

“We have already received a flurry of interest in the development which we are expecting to grow as the local community witnesses the development come to life.”

The Banks will feature homes with two, three, four and five bedrooms.

Waverley is being built on land owned by Harworth Estates, the property company of UK Coal.

The new township is to feature amenities including shops, restaurants, schools, leisure facilities, health and community centres.

Public open space is also a key feature of the proposals with almost half the site being made up of open space, woodland and three man-made lakes.

Around 9,000 people are expected to live at the new township once it is completed.

Harworth Estates said building will be phased over a 20-year period with a range of homes being built each year ‘to allow a gradual influx of people, minimising the impact on infrastructure’.

The overall development of the AMP is coming on rather nicely. It's still in Sheffield though.

That land has never been in Sheffield.

Ok, it might have been once, but its Rotherham now.

On a side note - the SBP is maturing well.
