Population to be controlled at 93 million in 2015 (VOV) - Vietnam aims to reduce its birth rate from 2.0 percent in 2010 to 1.9 percent by 2015, according to the national target program on population and family planning. Under the program for the 2012-2015 period, which has been approved by the Prime Minister, the country’s total population will be controlled at 93 million in the next three years, with population growth of around 1 percent by 2015. By mid-21st century, Vietnam’s population is expected to be stabilized at 115-120 million. The program focuses on coastal and island areas, aiming to successfully implement the national program and achieve the set targets for Vietnam’s sea and island strategy until 2020.

Ancient Vietnam The history of Vietnam began almost 5,000 years ago with Hong Bang Dynasty (2879 to 258 BC). The Hong Bang Dynasty were followed by the Thuc Dynasty (257-207 BC) and Trieu Dynasty (207-111 BC). These three major Vietnamese dynasties in the ancient time established the foundation for the nation of Vietnamese people. "Successive dynasties based in China ruled Vietnam directly for most of the period from 111 BC until 938 when Vietnam regained its independence.[1] Vietnam remained a tributary state to its larger neighbor China for much of its history but repelled invasions by the Chinese as well as three invasions by the Mongols between 1255 and 1285.[2] King Trần Nhân Tông later diplomatically submitted Vietnam to a tributary of the Yuan to avoid further conflicts. The independent period temporarily ended in the middle to late 19th century, when the country was colonized by France (see French Indochina). During World War II, Imperial Japan expelled the French to occupy Vietnam, though they retained French administrators during their occupation. After the war, France attempted to re-establish its colonial rule but ultimately failed. The Geneva Accords partitioned the country in two with a promise of democratic election to reunite the country. However, rather than peaceful reunification, partition led to the Vietnam War, a civil war and a major part of the Cold War. During this time, the People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union supported the North while the United States supported the South. After millions of Vietnamese deaths and the American withdrawal from Vietnam in March 1973, the war ended with the fall of Saigon to the North in April 1975. The reunified Vietnam suffered further internal repression and was isolated internationally due to the continuing Cold War and the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia. In 1986, the Communist Party of Vietnam changed its economic policy and began reforms of the private sector similar to those in China. Since the mid-1980s, Vietnam has enjoyed substantial economic growth and some reduction in political repression, though reports of corruption have also risen." Last update 30/09/2012 22:06:00 (GMT+7) Nationwide medical insurance by 2020: minister VietNamNet Bridge – The health industry will develop a medical insurance network across the country by 2020, Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien said at the opening of the 63rd Pacific Western Conference of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Hanoi on Monday. At the conference, Tuyen admitted that the quality of the country’s healthcare services is still poor and that nationwide medical insurance coverage still remains modest, at over 64% of the population. The local health industry is facing many difficulties and challenges in the context that the nation is at risk of falling into the poverty-trap and the gap of medical services access between localities and regions is widening, Tuyen said. She told the conference: “The Government has made firm commitments to carry out the road map of nationwide health insurance development, such as mobilizing locals to join the program and financing insurance premiums for the poor, children aged under six and other targeted people,” Tuyen noted. Doctor Shin Young-soo, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, said the current medical policies of Vietnam indicate the country is moving forward in the right direction. He noticed Vietnam has achieved all its millennium targets in terms of healthcare activities in the 2012-2015 period, promising to make all-out efforts to help the nation overcome the challenges. The conference, which is being attended by 350 representatives coming from 35 nations in the region, finishes on Friday. VietNamNet/SGT

Vietnam is world’s 14th biggest economy in 2050: PricewaterhouseCoopers 18-Jan-2011 Intellasia | Tuoi Tre | 7:01 AM Print This Post Vietnam is to be the world’s 14th biggest economy by 2050 with GDP’s growth rate at 8.8 percent – the highest in the world – when measured against purchasing power parities (PPP), said PricewaterhouseCoopers. According to a forecast by the UK financial consulting firm, Vietnam’s GDP is projected at $3,939 billion by 2050. The ranking that takes into account price differences among countries means the Vietnamese economy will be bigger than developed nations like Italy, Canada, South Korea, and Spain. The Southeast Asian country’s average annual real growth rate in GDP between 2009 and 2050 is estimated at 8.8 percent, the highest in world. China’s GDP is expected to grow 5.9 percent on the average while its rival India is predicted to achieve an 8.1 percent rise during the same period. At present, nine out of the ten biggest economies in the world as measured by market exchange rates are developed nations. But by 2050, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers, that number will slump to just four with the US at number two behind China, Japan at 5, Germany at 8 and the UK at 9. When using PPP, the decline in the west happens even more quickly with the US falling to third behind China and India by 2050 and the UK in 10th place, one place below Germany. Vietnam has just been rated the world’s 139th freest economy in a 2011 ranking released Wednesday by the US-based Heritage Foundation, up from 144th last year.

^Horseshit.
