Mecca: New skyscrapers destroying Islamic heritage?

Basically this thread was created to accomodate the discussion about this that goes on in the Abraj Al Bait thread in the supertalls forum. But since it involves more than just that particular project I thought it would be better to move all that discussion here. It is and issue with the city after all and not just the Abraj al Bait.

Here's one article:

Shame of the House of Saud: Shadows over Mecca
Previously unseen photographs (NOT PUBLISHED WITH THIS ARTICLE) reveal how religious zealots obsessed with idolatory have colluded with developers to destroy Islam's diverse heritage
By Daniel Howden
Published: 19 April 2006

There is a growing shadow being cast over Islam's holiest site. Only a few metres from the walls of the Grand Mosque in Mecca skyscrapers are reaching further into the sky, slowly blocking out the light. These enormous and garish newcomers now dwarf the elegant black granite of the Kaaba, the focal point of the four million Muslims' annual Haj pilgrimage.

The tower blocks are the latest and largest evidence of the destruction of Islamic heritage that has wiped almost all of the historic city from the physical landscape. As revealed in The Independent last August, the historic cities of Mecca and Medina are under an unprecedented assault from religious zealots and their commercial backers.

I saw plans for this a while ago, and thought the same thing. Do they really need to build that in Mecca? I've never been to Mecca, but that building isn't going to blend in well anywhere.

To put such a huge building next to such an important site is terrible, it looks more suited to Las Vegas than to Mecca.

Are there any plans to lift the racist ban on non-muslims visiting Mecca soon?

So the most prominent building in Mecca will be a hotel?

Reading that article, I can sense a MAJOR blowup in the Islamic world in the making - a potentially very sad end for a something with such a truly rich history. Simply put, Islam is losing its heritage and history - it's very essence.

This would be like all of the Christian holy and historic sites in the Jerusalem area AND around Saint Peter's Square in the Vatican being flattened and paved/built over. I can't even imagine that.

Likely not until the Sauds and the Wahhabis are gone. I'm not waiting up nights to see that happen.

The Saudis are ruining Makkah with all this stuff.

I love skyscrapers, but I'm troubled by the development and destruction of historic structures. Build that stuff in Jeddah or Taif nearby...not right next door to the Kaaba. It's blasphemous and tasteless.

I wouldn't count on it, but since anyone can be Muslim, I think all you have to do to get in is incredibly blend in. I wouldn't come in with tourist gear though.

Yeah, it always makes me wonder how you prove someone isn't a Muslim.

Interestingly, this is not easy for many Muslims either. The reason is, that as Wahabis discount all other interpretations of Islam, they make it extremely difficult for others to come in. The various Shi'a groups have a terrible time. The people have to show a proof of being Muslim statement from their Mosque / Masjid, however, statements from the prayer houses of certain interpretations are not counted as valid by the Wahabis. This may seem like a tangential item, but it relates directly to the destruction of heritage. The Wahabis do not want to listen to other people's views, and in fact, are bent on destroying heritage relating to the history of other groups and diversity in general. The irony is that Wahabism is a relatively new phenomenon - perhaps only 150 years old or so, but instead is often presented as the original way. That is a bunch of crud! They are only a modern era phenomenon.

Just as an example, the Prophet's wife Khadija ran her own caravan business, and in fact, the prophet worked for her. That is how they met, and he ended up marrying her (she was also slightly elder to him). Currently lineage from the Prophet is only from Khadija, and this family is revered by most Muslims. Problem is, the Wahabis don't respect that because it gives other interpretations a level of credibility that they themselves don't have. As a result, they bulldozed Khadija's home and build public lavatories there. Now you can see from their choice, not only to bulldoze, but also what they did with the space, that there is more to what happens than just 'we need that land for the pilgrims'.

Saudi Arabia is full of land - they can build anywhere.

i dont understand why they dont just build this like 5-10 miles away.
just build a light rail and some buses or something and all the controversy would disappear.

I was thinking the same thing. Build this tower on the outskirts and install a maglev line to a station next to the mosque. I know Saudi Arabia has the money but then again it's just a building. If people around the world considered 5 story buildings to be massively tall then people would be protesting if they built a 15 story building next to the mosque. I think it's just a matter of perspective. It looks like now they need to build taller buildings around this area just to even things out.
