While your statement is correct, I think AllUrban was commenting in context of the original article that started this thread.

Anyway, a recent BBC series called 'Building for Islam' was very informative and interesting along these lines. They talked about a large architecture award in the Muslim world, and it was fascinating to hear about and see the diversity of projects, as well as to learn of the thoughtfulness of the awards process. I highly encourage those interested in this subject matter to watch part one of the four part series at:

No they do represent Islam, they represent the first generations of muslims .
You relating some hideous building and as such extremely awful planning departments to religious belief is dishonest

I don't believe the Saud family existed back then. From a cultural perspective, you're right (though the first generation included more than Arab - consider Bilal), but have a read of the following post on the Abraj al Bait thread (written by a Saudi)

am i right?
Here is another post on the same Abraj al Bait thread (written by another Saudi)

So this is how the Saudi's are projecting themselves.

Now before I get accused of going off topic, I want to highlight that this type of thinking was behind the unilateral decisions on development around the Kaaba. As you certainly will know, the Turks protested the destruction of the castle mentioned previously, and the Saudis simply came back and said, it doesn't matter what anyone else says.

This makes the title of the first post in this thread all the more appropriate.

It's terribly awful, and that giant Big Ben is one of the crappiest things I've ever seen.

For those who are not aware, this is what they are building on the site of the Ottoman castle:

Isn't Mekka a place where all muslims cometogether as equals? So why are there 5.000+ USD a night hotels, while others have to sleep in tents?

while that comment is probably outside the scope of this thread, it is something others have also voiced on the Abraj al Bait project's thread. It can be found at:

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=334299

For the record, I share your concern.

I tot that's the palace of the Klingon Emperor or something . I do not favor this project, the design is so stupid and looks like a place for only rich Muslims(dictators, corrupt officials, exiled leaders, mafia, stupid people who're just rich) and nullify the value of equality in Mecca.

You seem to have strong feelings about it, and I can understand where you are coming from. Given this, I really do encourage you to post on the project's thread, where there are a diversity of thoughts presented:

Dubai's boring anyway Davidearl. Most of the buildings are hideous, and it's basically built around one big freeway. I stopped over there for two days and hated every single minute.

back to the topic at hand:

so sad and upset that the saudis could not see the value and heritage of the ottoman castle......

are there still really bad feelings about ottoman rule 100 years later??

just curious....
