The funicular - it's barely a transportation mean, more like tourist attraction...
with very expensive fares for the ride. I bet no one from the citizens
of the capital uses it to get up the hill.

Well, I am a public transport freak who has recently visited Budapest. It was really great.
But I have also some questions.

On every stop a covered information panel were installed. But it seemed to be out of order yet. Is it something new to be launched?

I have noticed junctions in Deak Ferenc tér station. The tracks of the lines are mutually connected?

by the way, some of my photos:

Not at every stop but at all major stops (we're talking about 263 panels). Most of these information panels have already been placed. All trams buses and trolleybuses will be integrated into this system. It will start operation in the next few months.

Thank you for the quick response. If I understand right, M1 metro is de facto rather tram line running underneath Andrassy Street?

Yes nowadays it can be considered rather as an LRT or a 'rapid tram' than a usual metro. If we look at the definition of a metro we can see that M1 is an urban, electric rail transport line with a high frequency of service and it is totally separated from other traffic.

It's capacity is a bit less than today's standards for a metro line. We have some trams which carry more people than the trains runnning on M1.

But you should not forget that this was the second underground line in the world after the one in London.

When I was in Budapest, I took the M1, and these trains surprised me!
How old are these trains?

Most of these yellow trains have been running on the line since 1973. Two additional cars were made in 1987.

The line itself was inaugurated in 1896.

Do you think that Line 4 will open in 2014? Construction started in 2006 isn't? It is not very much time to built a line?

Budapest has no extensions since 1990, I think that there is a much time. I have a question:

- Line 1,2 and 3 are going to be extended? Or they are finished?

Yes. Most of the stations are ready or almost ready and the trains are being tested in the tunnels.

The tunnels have to be quite deep under the Danube so it was not just a simple cut and cover job. However it could have been finished by now - the whole history of this line is stained with political debates and some other hard issues. I don't want to start this argument here for the millionth time - let's just say there were and there are many controversies about this line.

There are plans to extend all of those lines and even a fifth metro line is planned (it will be more like an S-Bahn, merging three of Budapest's five suburban railway lines). But these are just plans - in my opinion only one or two of them will become reality in the next decade (probably the northern extension of the M3 line but who am I to know).

Thank you for the video Qtya I see that the tunnels have a single rail, not a double rail. My question is, It is not bad for frecuencies?
