SPANISH rolling stock manufacturer CAF is to assemble LRVs for Budapest in Hungary under a contract concluded recently with the Hungarian government

Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) placed an initial €90m order for 37 CAF Urbos LRVs earlier this year and recently exercised an option for an additional 10 units.

In order to provide sufficient production capacity to meet BKK's delivery schedule, CAF will transfer final assembly of some of the vehicles to the Bombardier MÁV plant in Dunakeszi, and it is hoped the facility will eventually be able to carry out full assembly of LRVs.

Previously the plant has been used by Bombardier to build and overhaul coaches, and the facility has also fabricated bodyshells for DMUs. However the company struggled to secure orders for the plant in recent years and it is hoped the agreement with CAF will safeguard 400 jobs.

It has also been suggested that the Hungarian government may decide to acquire Bombardier MÁV, effectively meaning the trams would be assembled by the Hungarian state. According to Bombardier MÁV and government officials, the company would then seek to produce trams not only for Budapest but also for other European operators.

As part of the project tracks in the Dunakeszi plant and the rail connection to the main line network will be electrified with a system that could be used both by main line railway vehicles at 25kV ac 50Hz or the trams being built at 600V dc, effectively creating a 2km test track.

The city of Budapest presented its public transport development plans:



Key elements:
-Metro line M1 will reach the Danube embankment at Vigadó tér and will be extended to Kassai tér to the northeast.
-Metro line M2 will be intergated with suburban railway lines H8 and H9.
-Metro line M3 will be extended almost to the northern border of the city
-Suburban railway lines H6 and H7 will have a joint underground section under the city center to reach Kálvin tér and Astoria metro stations. H7 will also be extended to the south and the route of H6 will be slightly modified via a new underground section in District XX.
-The city will have a new train station at Közvágóhíd, its proposed name is Danubius

-Tram line 1 will be extended from both of its ends (Note that the section between Közvágóhíd and etele út / Fehérvári út is u/c at the moment) to Kelenföld railway and metro station and the proposed train station at Aranyvölgy (it is likely that other trams will also use the latter section)
-Tram line 2 will be extended to Gyöngyösi utca metro station
-Tram line 3 will be extended to Árpád híd metro station
-Tram line 42 will also be extended to the southeast
-The cog-wheel railway (tram line 60) will be extended to Normafa to the west and to Széll Kálmán tér metro station to the east (the latter part will most likely mean that the cog-wheel trains will use the regular tram tracks from Városmajor to Széll Kálmán tér)
-New tram track will be (re)built between Lehel tér and Deák Ferenc tér metro stations
-The most important tram-related development will be the (re)introduction of tram tracks from the outer parts of District XV all the way to the city center

The plans for M5 or North-South Regional Rapid Railway are about combining H6 and H7 and then connecting them with H5 via a tunnel under the city center. And this map shows the first phase of that.

Now of course complete grade separation is part the definition of a metro line and the proposed line will most likely have some level crossings (mostly in the suburban areas) but only a few.

I like the plans, but I thought that the direction from Keleti pályaudvar to Bosnyák tér is busy enough for a metro line. Why the new tram instead of M4 extension?

Mostly because of cost saving and the low number of projected passengers - we currently have an ongoing debate about this in the Hungarian thread.

Quite a good question especially since metro line M1 connects many touristy areas and it would be useful if visitors could get to the Castle District (which has no direct metro connection yet) more easily.

However one thing is for sure: It can't go under the river. The Danube is pretty deep at Budapest and metro line M1 runs just below street level.

So it has to go above it - but the view of the Danube embankments along with the Buda Castle District is a UNESCO World Heritage site so you have to be careful with any kind of alteration. The two options at the moment are building a new bridge for this purpose or making room for the metro trains on an already existing bridge (e.g. on Erzsébet brigde) - however both are unlikely at the moment.

Martin_R2, a Hungaian forumer showed us a proposal with a new bridge a few years ago
