I am afraid those cities may have their home price downgraded due to credit crunch. I am hoping this credit crunch will only last for few months.

If you're celebrating this, you're a dumb shit. This has nothing to do with wealth, and everything to do with limitations of land/housing, which lead to a squeezing of the middle class. Even young professionals in some of these cities are getting screwed over, and are ending up living with their parents until they can find a job in a cheaper metro with more reasonable housing costs.

Exactly, the "price" of a house is very different from the "quality" of a house.

For example, this house in Detroit costs $925,000:

This house in San Jose costs $1,059,999:

The one in Detroit did not make the list, the one in San Jose did. So sure, San Jose has more people who are willing to pay $1 million for a house than Detroit, but that doesn't mean that San Jose has the better housing stock. In fact it shows just how messed up Californians are for even thinking about paying $1 million for a crappy ranch like that.

I wonder what it would be on a % of total homes basis or at least normalized to population...I'm sure Naples would be pretty near the top since it comes in at #21 in total number of 1mil+ homes.

I rather to buy a house in SJ for 1 million than a 900,000 house in Detroit..

I'm not sure where you're getting your numbers, dimondpark... but I know that there is at least ONE home in Pittsburgh city limits that is for sale for $1,950,000. But maybe it's just going for twice its real value? lol

Not only location but the weather, crime activity, the great schools and the level of education for children, the community, the surroundings like its near of some of the best National Parks or the great city of San Francisco. Detroit has a good suburban neighborhood but sadly, people outside Michigan only talks about the downtown area which is kind of disappointing because its affecting the suburban area.

So don't think Californians are messed up. There are more Researchers and Engineers living in this area than any part of United States. It is the very center of Research and Development not only in United States, but the whole world which rivals Tokyo and nobody else.

By the way, let's go back to the topic, shall we?

Yeah, people who took this to be a housing stock barometer are mistaken. It has more to do with location and economy than anything else.

According to the American Factfinder, there are 48 houses in Hartford worth $1m or more...

The city is still quite undervalued, but you aren't going to find much cheap housing either.

Are those single family home numbers... or do they include apartments, duplexes, high-rise or penthouses..! I'll bet it includes all of the above plus..
