Protein samples to be sent to space station in September
July 14, 2010, Wednesday http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=48206 KUALA LUMPUR: Three protein samples produced by a local scientist will be sent to the International Space Station (ISS) onboard the Russian Soyuz spaceship this September. The research findings of Prof Dr Raja Noor Zaliha Raja Abdul Rahman, a lecturer at Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) Microbiology Department, will be tested by the Japan Aerospace And Exploration Agency (Jaxa) at the ISS for two to three months. “Jaxa stated their interest in testing the protease and lipase protein sample I came up with. “After talks with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti), we sent two samples to Japan and in August I will go there to send the third sample before it boards the Soyuz in September,” she told reporters after presenting the findings of a research on micro gravity science under the National Angkasawan Programme in parliament yesterday. Dr Raja Noor was among scientists involved in preparing five samples that were taken to the ISS by Malaysia’s first astronaut Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor in October 2007. However, she said this delivery would not involve the astronaut since the samples would be filled in Japan and sent directly on the Soyuz. Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili, in his speech, said the government was committed to commercializing the micro gravity science research findings. He said this was because it would generate new income for the country through patent royalties which could be used for the oleo chemical, biotechnology and medical industries. “The ISS is one of the largest laboratories built in space to conduct micro gravity science experiments. Industry products generated by the European Space Agency (ESA) is between RM332 million and RM369 million. “Meanwhile, in America, commercialisation of micro gravity science research in various industries such as aero gel, protein crystallisation and ceramic bones has raked in almost RM100 billion,” he added. — Bernama

Astronaut programme temporarily in the backburner — Fadillah
by Lim How Pim. Posted on October 18, 2010, Monday http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=69247 ![]() SARAWAK GOT TALENT: Fadillah (centre) gives the thumb-up after flagging off the pre-event for Malaysia Innovative Carnival 2010 Sarawak Zone. KUCHING: Malaysia may see a second astronaut probably only in five or 10 years time. Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Fadillah Yusof said the government presently had no specific plan to groom another astronaut but the idea would be mooted under the Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP). “The focus for now is on the 12 National Key Result Areas (NKRAs) and one of them is to bridge the gap of development. This would eventually enhance social harmony and lead to the attainment of a high-income economic status. “We will look at the probability of a second astronaut only after the economy elevates. When we have the fund, we can talk about the astronaut programme. At the moment we will continue our research development programme,” he told the press after flagging off the pre-event for Malaysia Innovative Carnival 2010 Sarawak Zone at the Kuching Waterfront here yesterday. A total of 20 boats, 20 taxis and 10 vans participated in the flag-off. The carnival, scheduled for Oct 23 and 24, aims to attract some 20,000 participants, exhibitors, performers and visitors. With an ultimate objective of promoting creativity in many aspects among the local communities, several activities have been lined up for the coming two-day event that will take place at Kuching Waterfront and Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK). An activity, 1Malaysia Astronaut Challenge Programme, is fixed on Oct 24. Fadillah, who is Petra Jaya MP, pointed out that the challenge programme involved a ‘tarian sihat rakyat’ (health dance) and a run. “Five finalists of the run will take part in the national-level Malaysia Innovative Carnival 2010 to be held at Bukit Jalil. The winner of the national-level programme will be trained in Russia, the United States or Britain. He said a ‘creative musical night’ would take place at BCCK where the Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin is scheduled to attend. “This is a different contest as we encourage participants to stage performance relating to science, technology and innovation,” said Fadillah. Prior to the Sarawak Zone, similar carnival has been organised in Northern Zone – Perlis, Sabah Zone – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in Kota Kinabalu and Southern Zone – Pantai Timur. After this, the carnival will be brought to Melaka and the finale at Bukit Jalil. During the national-level carnival at Bukit Jalil, Fadillah said all the best creative products and musical performers elected from the various zones would be highlighted. “So far, those held in other zones have been very fascinating and we received innovative performances,” he said, adding that he expected the musical night at BCCK on Oct 23 to be something very different. Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is expected to officiate at the Malaysia Innovative Carnival 2010 Sarawak Zone at the Kuching Waterfront at 9am on Oct 23. Among the activities to be held are ‘Sarawak Longest Layered Cake’, which is to be listed in the Malaysia Book of Records, ‘Innovative Fashion Queen’, ‘Sarawak Creative Talent’, exhibition, seminars and lucky draw. For more information on the carnival, visit www.malaysiainovatif.gov.my.

By DHARMENDER SINGH Wednesday October 20, 2010 http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...221&sec=nation PUTRAJAYA: The government will consider a special allocation to put second Angkasawan Major Dr Faiz Khaleed in space during the mid-term review of the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) in 2012, said Science, Technology and Innovations Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili. Dr Ongkili said the Cabinet had agreed to continue the Angkasawan programme under the 10MP although no allocation had been set aside yet to send the second astronaut into space. He said the Government’s immediate priority was to develop the country’s economy in view of the target to achieve the high-income and developed nation status by 2020. “We agree the aerospace sector has huge potential but we have more immediate needs to deal with,” he told a press confe- rence after launching the First International Conference on Managing Eco-System Health of Tropical Seas (Ecoseas 2010) here yesterday. He also said that many studies were still ongoing on the results obtained from the first Angkasawan programme and for now the government wanted to maximise the use of the data collected while also raising awareness, especially among students, on the importance of science and technology. On another matter, Dr Ongkili said his ministry would seek a RM20mil allocation under the 10MP for applied research and development programmes related to marine eco-system management. He said the government allocated RM14.2mil under the 9MP for research conducted by the ministry, higher education institutions and other related organisations but the ministry felt more research was necessary.

Second space outing not soon but mission to last longer
Published: Wednesday November 24, 2010 MYT 1:09:00 PM http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...728&sec=nation KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia plans to have its second astronaut stay in the International Space Station (ISS) for weeks or months instead of days, but the next space mission is unlikely to take place soon - at least not in the next couple of years. National Space Agency director-general Dr Mustafa Subari said time was necessary to work out the details of the preparations and for the negotiation process with potential collaborators. "A few things have to be sorted out before the mission can be launched, including partnership and the types of experiment to be conducted on board the ISS," he said Wednesday. He gave the assurance, however, that the programme had received the nod from the Government, considering the benefits it would bring to the nation. "It is ongoing but it won't happen in the next few years, maybe at the end of the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP). But the commitment given by the Government under the 10MP is a good start," he said. Dr Mustafa said the agency was still in the midst of negotiating with potential collaborators such as the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) in order to provide the necessary facilities and arrangements. "To date, the negotiations are still not finalised. We haven't got any concrete proposals from them as yet," he said. He said unlike the first mission, Malaysia planned to send the second astronaut on a longer mission to the ISS. Malaysia's first astronaut Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor spent only 10 days in the ISS in October 2007 and conducted five experiments. "It (the last mission) was quite short. So, for the second mission, we hope to have the astronaut stay longer in the ISS, maybe a few weeks to months, so that he can carry out more scientific experiments on micro gravity," he said. Recently, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili was reported as saying that the Cabinet had agreed to continue the astronaut programme under the 10th Malaysia Plan (2011-2015). However, no allocation has been set aside for the second mission as yet although allocations have been given for space training and education purposes. Mustafa said he estimated that at least US$20mil (RM62.5mil) was needed to fund the project. He also said Malaysia would have to launch another search for backup astronaut candidates once the second mission was launched. Major Dr Faiz Khaleed, who was the backup astronaut for the first mission, has been named as the potential astronaut for the second mission. - Bernama

Tuesday July 26, 2011 http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...&if_height=471 IT'S a baby girl for Malaysian astronaut Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and his wife Dr Halina Mohd Yunos, reported Kosmo! Named Sophea Isabella, the 3.6kg baby was born on July 21 at a hospital here after an 18-hour labour. Dr Halina, who currently works at Hospital Selayang, gave birth to Sophea via the water birth method. Dr Sheikh Muszaphar said his wife chose the method as it was “less painful” and “more natural”. “My wife was warded at 2am on Friday and she delivered at 9.08pm,” he said. The excited father said Sophea was the greatest gift from God and declared himself ready for fatherhood. “We have done extensive reading about childcare. We've also obtained advice from our parents,” he said. > A cheating wife lost both her husband and health when she contracted HIV after sleeping with her former boyfriend, reported Harian Metro. The 26-year-old woman had reunited with her former flame on Facebook and they embarked on an affair. Wanting to end her marriage, she filed for divorce on the grounds that her husband had given her HIV. However, her deception was uncovered when medical check-ups showed that the 27-year-old husband was perfectly healthy. Sukaguam lawyer Datuk Khairul Anwar Rahmat said a nusyuz declaration had been filed after her lies were revealed. “This shows the disease she suffers from was due to the affair with her ex-boyfriend,” he said. Khairul Anwar said he had advised people to be careful of what they write on online social sites. He said men could take advantage of angry or dissatisfied wives who shared their woes on Facebook and other sites.

Program Angkasawan Negara kedua diteruskan jika objektifnya kukuh
—Bernama

High time for M’sia to produce its first female astronaut
Posted on March 23, 2012, Friday http://www.theborneopost.com/2012/03...ale-astronaut/ KOTA BAHARU: National astronaut Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha yesterday said it was high time for Malaysia to produce its first female astronaut. He said the move could boost the spirit and inspire more women to venture into the aerospace industry in line with rapid development of science and technology education. “It can possibly be done within the next two to five years,” he told reporters after presenting a motivational talk here yesterday. Present was Kelantan Information and Information Science and Technology Development Committee chairman Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan. Dr Sheikh Muszaphar also expressed confidence that Malaysia could produce more astronauts in the future following the increase in the number of students in science stream. — Bernama
