contemporary artists
I have to come up with a name of a still alive artist who one interesting enough for me to give a talk on so I wondered anyone got any ideas for a leading contemporary artist who is influencing the art world right now preferably one who isn't totally off their trolley? Thanks.

It's cliched but you could try Banksy.

There is a big list of contemporary artists in the Saatchi Gallery website.
http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/art...ts_p001.htm.en I would recommend Damien Hirst, not because I like his work or anything, just that he's quite well known. |

Go for Tracey Emin.
She can't sculpt or draw for toffee. But I like her. She seems like a nice girl. |

I'd also go for Damien Hirst, has some local connection and named this buliding http://www.bspd.co.uk/branch-7-300.jpg (the Worseley medical building in Leeds) as his favourite building.

David Hockney is still at it. Getting on a bit now though. Although he's most famous for his paintings, he's also dabbled with other media, such as photography.

"Tracey Emin shows us her own bed, in all its embarrassing glory. Empty booze bottles, fag butts, stained sheets, worn panties: the bloody aftermath of a nervous breakdown. By presenting her bed as art, Tracey Emin shares her most personal space, revealing she’s as insecure and imperfect as the rest of the world.''

Thanks. Ideally artists with big names but not the most well known artists like Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin or David Hockney etc. Thanks.

Check this out, it's perfect for what you are after:
http://the-artists.org/art-movements.cfm Gilbert and George would be my choice for a talk... lots to talk about philosophically, and visually... not to mention their narrative of social behaviour.

Thanks.
Any links are really great cos mY PC died on me and I lost all my art files.. well all my files cos I'd forgotton to back them up for a year or so. I think the artist can be any nationality they just must still be alive and influincing the art world in some way. Gilbert and George are a good choice..to the public I'd guess they are probably the most lovable of all artists.

I used to work in a gallery (well a 'project space') and go to a fair number of exhibitions, but I can never remember the names.
Who's that guy who did those amazing kinetic sculptures, with light bulbs spinning around on giant wooden machines. He had a show in the Walker in Liverpool a couple of years ago. He's great. Apparently it's COnrad Shawcross. |
