Cooperation between Hong Kong and Shenzhen Airports

HK Policy Address this year:

Quote:
(6) Hong Kong-Shenzhen Airport Co-operation:
The HKIA and Shenzhen Airport are two major airports in the PRD region. The HKIA ranks among the busiest international airports in the world in terms of both passenger and cargo traffic, while Shenzhen Airport handles far more domestic flights than Hong Kong. For the two airports to fully complement each other and achieve a win-win situation, it is necessary to study the feasibility and economic benefits of establishing a rail connection between the two. Currently, high-speed ferry services ply between the two airports. A rail link can forge even closer ties. I am glad that the Shenzhen Municipal Government strongly supports the proposals on further co-operation between the two airports. To follow up, the two governments will form a joint task force. The Airport Authority will provide research support to the task force. We hope that specific work plans can be drawn up early next year.

They should build a maglev line between the two airport. That would make the most sense. I think maglev is the best idea for airport connections because your trip to the airport should never be longer than the flight.

Could we see HKG completely abolishing its China flights and Shenzhen completely abolishing its international flights if this happens? It's certainly cheaper that way for travellers.

Impossible, as the distance (less than 40 KM) between the HK and SZ Airports is very close, it would be very costly to build a maglev.

It won't go this way, also neither for Macau / Zhuhai and even Guangzhou, as the time of the land transport could lengthen the total cost (don't just count the cost in $$$!) of travel.

maglev is just too expensive to build, and there is really no need for a maglev

Wow, sounds exactly like the expanding cooperation between CPH and MMX (Malmö) airports. Ever since the Ö-Bridge was completed, MMX has taken over more and more LCC, charter and cargo traffic from CPH, and it will enhance even further when the future high speed rail link between the two airport is finished.

Good news for HK/SZ.

Hong Kong is far too large an international airport to see much interest in Shenzhen besides a feeder cargo facility, but HKIA already took over Zhuhai's ailing airport for that purpose.

Low cost carriers are already using Shenzhen, but they're not the typical LCCs in Europe. Mainland carriers offer tickets at substantial discounts from Shenzhen, but it still takes forever to get there, so Hong Kongers tend to pay the premium and fly out of HKG instead.
