And what about the VIA Ocean service out east?

They cite a huge demand drop despite investments to make services better. It is explained in more detail on the VIA website.

On the Halifax-Montreal line there used to be a train that departed from each terminal each day but Tuesday. But as of tomorrow, they're cutting the schedule from 6 trains per week in each direction to 3 trains per week. And tomorrow (Thursday 2012.10.25) will be the first Thursday without this train.

This is the new schedule:

Part of the continuing disintegration of long-distance passenger rail travel in Canada.

Meanwhile, novelty/tourist rail's expanding ... Montreal's commuter rail operator, for example, is mandated to run at least a dozen various excursions, all of which are gaudy of which several recur throughout summertime ...

Certainly enough to warrant quadruple-tracking...intercity service too easily delayed up to ½ hour by freight traffic...currently a pair of tracks for cn; a single one with passing sidings for cp.

Via Rail boosts service to Quebec City, Toronto
Locomotive refits will save fuel, reduce emissions

Ottawa Citizen December 4, 2012

Via Rail engineer Claude Gorley, in the driver’s seat of a retrofitted F40 diesel locomotive which boasts new technologies to cut greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 13 per cent, reduce maintenance costs by 15 per cent yearly and save about five million litres of fuel annually across the fleet of 70 locomotives.

OTTAWA — Just in time for Christmas, Via Rail Canada is adding two new direct routes between Ottawa and Quebec City, plus two new departure times between Ottawa and Toronto, all starting Dec. 10.

Overall, the busy Ottawa — Toronto — Quebec City corridor will see four new trains per weekday and four more on weekends, for a total of 28.

The additional service, plus other initiatives, was announced Monday at the Ottawa train station.

“Our government is committed to creating a safe, efficient and reliable passenger rail service for Canadians,” Minister of State Steven Fletcher said in a statement, adding that the federal government had “invested nearly $1 billion in passenger rail since 2007”.

Via will offer the new direct trains travelling between Ottawa and Quebec City in only five hours and 30 minutes. Departures from Monday to Friday at 5:35 a.m. from Quebec City and at 4:10 p.m. from Ottawa will be offered, starting at $75 in Economy class and $158 in Business class.

Two new departure times will be added to the 14 daily options already available for train travel to and from Ottawa and Toronto: at 2:25 p.m. departing from Toronto and at 7:30 a.m. departing from Ottawa, Monday to Friday.

The company also announced Monday the return to service of its fleet of 53 EMD F40 diesel-electric locomotives, which have been refurbished and modernized under a $100-million program that will extend their life 15 to 20 years, at less than half the cost of purchasing new equipment.

The upgraded engines, which represent about 70 per cent of Via Rail’s locomotive fleet, now have a layover heating system and an automatic engine start/stop system (AESS), enabling both diesel engines on each unit to be shut down when sitting for long periods in terminals and yards, providing major fuel, emissions and noise reductions. The work by CAD Railway Industries integrated many systems not available when the locomotives were built in the late 1980s, said Via Rail.

Via Rail says it expects a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of as much as 13 per cent, which is in addition to a companywide greenhouse gas reduction of 16 per cent since 1990.

The second-generation F40 fleet will produce fuel savings of more than five million litres a year and reduce maintenance costs by 15 per cent annually, the company said.

“Via Rail also announced Monday the closure last year of 55 private rail crossings on the route between Ottawa and Montreal, part of $40.4 million that company has spent since 2009 improving safety for Via’s operations and the general public at railway crossings, including crossing closures, improvements, alternate access and other initiatives.

Every year in Canada about 300 collisions and trespassing incidents occur at such crossings resulting in a death or serious injury, it said.
