Don't think so. They are Himalayan Nepalese, they climb extreme heights, don't base jump from them.

From all the window washing things I've caught recently (that nice bit on Youtube about Eureka Tower for example), I'm guessing they are using manpower as a pre-clean. Normally when they send a BMU down or gondola with window washers, they are limited to manually washing - ie. human power - to lightly clean the windows. Right now they are doing the first clean and so need powerwashing to really get all that dirt and grime off. I'm sure their packs are more powerful than the BMUs that will be on the tower in the end, so really, this is most likely a one-time deal or a temporary solution until all BMUs are active.

Of course if anyone happens to know firsthand whether BMUs on BD are all gondolas or machine / automatic, feel free to correct me on that.

Still though.. WOW! They had better get good pay for that

I agree with you totally, however the top part of the tower that is not reachable by any of the BMUs, will be manually cleaned by them.

OMG! that is way too high.... so windy up there... imagine if a supertall such as this one was built in the Bay Area: cleaning the highest windows, looking down to a city that is covered under a thick layer of fog/mist and the viewssss...wow!

Thanks for the reply AltinD. Makes sense if there's no other way to clean the highest parts. Oh well... as more people visit this building once it opens, it'll be quite the sight to capture should you have a camera with a long lens!

Hi all.

Hey guys, the plan has always been to use BMU's with platforms hanging from them and manual washing by workers. Only recently has there been any news on the cleaners absailing from the highest BMU's. Since they never installed the top platform and its monorail for a BMU they will have to absail to clean the pinnacle. The latest word is there will be no platforms for a few of the highest BMU's although I'm not sure how many. I agree with Real that where they are cleaning in Deserts shots will probably be done with a platform normally.

Stephan - there are 24,348 cladding panels.

It will be good the get a shot of the top from the R1 crane side. I'm fairly certain as per my last post that they are setting up the small R3 crane.

That cleaned part of the building looks good. This whole thing is going to look so good once finished and all cleaned up.

Hi Charlotte, I was kinda more directing that part of the comment when the building is long-opened and in regular service. To be visiting there as a tourist and happen to catch people scaling the top to clean it would be neat to see! But yeah, of course the opening of the tower is a must-see too!

...Honestly aside from all the talk of either 12-2-09 or 12-31-09 (sorry in the USA here so December 2nd or December 31st), we don't know when BD will be open yet. Last I heard from Emaar was by the end of the year but no firm date.

Hi Real.

I agree with Imre that 09 12 02 is a soft opening date. Of course Emaar leaves it as the opening while neglecting to say full. Full opening will most likely be well into '10.

They could very well have all the hoopla in Dec. though and never let the general public know that the entire scope of the works is not completed.
That would fit right in with the long history of secrecy on this project.

Like the Metro, a hyped up advertized BS program that says 9/9/9 as opening.

No one mentioned for VIP and invites only.

Real public opening was really 10/9/09

In Sweden they've recently started to sell self-cleaning windows. All they need is rain and it breaks down the dirt and washes it away.

Sweden has a "bit" more rain than the UAE though

the lifts travel at 10m/sec. highest lift run 514m/lev138fl.
Otis will supply 66 lifts.
As part of the US $36 million contract, Otis will supply and install 58 elevators and eight escalators. Among the elevators are 20 Gen2 machine-roomless units, featuring Otis’ unique coated-steel, flat-belt technology, and two double-deck units, which will service Burj’s observation deck. The double-deck elevators, capable of accommodating 23 persons on each deck, will have the world’s highest rise and longest travel distance, and be among the world’s fastest at 10 meters per second (more than 20 mph).
