Looks like they used R1 to assemble R3. Once R1 is gone, how will they disassemble R3? Perhaps using a BMU or an even smaller crane?

On another note, next week's The Amazing Race will take place in Dubai. They showed a glimpse of Burj Dubai during the preview this week. It would be awesome if one of the challenges took place inside BD, but that is extremely wishful thinking given that the building wasn't (and of course still isn't) open when the show was filmed. Hopefully one of the challenges was close to BD and/or within or on top of another Dubai supertall.

For those outside the USA or not familiar with TAR:

Hi all.

Hi Swiddle.

R3 is small enough to be assembled and disassembled by hand. I think they used R1 just to save some time. Good eye though - I noticed that too.

R3 has been set up at least twice before it was up on level 159. There was no other crane to help on those occasions as they were on different terraces and were also before any BMU's were installed. The whole plan for using a Favco SDD 5/10 as the final recovery crane is because it can be broken down by hand into small enough pieces to be taken down in an elevator.

I hope we do see the BD on some more TV shows soon - preferable documentary type shows on just the Burj but any coverage will do. The last one I have is from 2008.

- As for the post above mine ...
- and your on a skyscraper forum because ...

Crap dvd cover featuring the Burj...

Hrmm...

Was browsing Blockbuster earlier tonight, and I saw this on the shelves:

It looks to be a typical crap B-movie that somehow coaxed it's way onto the blockbuster new-release shelf, as so many B-movies have (which is a shame because so many brilliant indie films go straight to the messy stacks in the overlooked center aisles) .

The photoshop work is very amateurish, and it clearly indicates that the designer figured most Americans would not recognize Dubai and would accept what they see as a post-apocalyptic setting, rather than a giant construction site. Sadly, the designer assumes right for the most part. I live in Denver and most of the people here have never even heard of the UAE... Denver is a sports bar town, ignorance breeds well here.

Anyways, I was shocked to see this. I think it's shameful that this made it to distribution with such a cover, and I'd like to alert everyone here that it's very likely this image was made using a photo shot by one of our great contributers here and used without permission.

Imre, AltinD, Gerald, 234sale, Parsian Girl (or anyone else), do you recognize the photo?

They've used a aerial picture taken from a plane or helicopter somewhere in early 2008.

I think the idea is that the Burj has been partially destroyed, and they've stuck a beacon on the top of it.

It seems that videos give a larger sense of scale than photos. That development in BB never seems that large when seen next to the Burj, but in this video it just seems overwhelming.
