Indeed a splendid vista from the tower of luxury! Burj al Arab could probably be the one and only place to have the entire panorama over Dubai, although the distances are rather big.
Further to the right there's Dubai Marina and Jumeira Lake Towers, so a picture of the view towards the South would be great, too (maybe in another thread).
Of course there are also many supertalls on the way around Marina, but Burj Dubai will make the difference at least for the next years - although Al Burj could be the tower to exceed BD someday...

edit: I estimate the distance between Burj Al Arab and Burj Dubai around 12 km (can't verify this at the moment, cause my googleearth is down)

Awesome updates Imre

Cladding is coming on nicely, I love those shots showing the workers putting it up.

I'd love to be the guy on the edge looking down.

Greetings and Asaalam Aleikum. I've been following this thread since the Burj was just a big hole in the ground, but everyone has done such a magnificant job of asking and answering anything I could possibly have thought of, I haven't felt the need to post. And of course count me among the legion of Imre admirers. Wonderful photos!!!

So what has changed? Emirates Airlines has just started up non-stop flights from Toronto to Dubai and the Burj is just a mere 14-hours away. OK, not so "mere", but still a lot quicker than it used to be. I'm hoping, Insha'allah, to visit in February/March of 2009 to see the completed Burj. So I'm wondering, although I know this will be a lot easier to answer in a few months time, what are the odds are of the Burj being done by then? Also wondering about the temperature. I know the days will be OK, but would prefer to be there when the nights don't require me to wear anything more than a light shirt. My travel dates are flexible. Also wondering whether I'll be able to take pictures without the Burj being masked by that layer of haze, smog, dust or is it sand? Is there some time of the year when the air is particularly clear? Many thanks/Shukrun.

to my eyes, I could almost convince myself that there were maybe 3 windows there and a fourth being lowered into place, but looking more, I think not...it's too small to be windows, plus OTR says nothing happening there.
checked today ,this is just another outside elevator but interesting because they have 2 on those levels

It will not be completed by then, but very close to it. The weather should be pleasand and there should be no need to wear something more. The visibility depends from the wind directions but a few days of rain should clear all out regardless.

Once again, great shots Imre!

That picture from the Burj al Arab is about 15 days old though so it's not that recent, and as for distance (someone asked it), it's about 15 miles or so away from the site. Correct me if I am wrong.

And here's another image from 12/20 (killah_unit - flickr)

The relationship between Parc1 and Burj Dubai is that Samsung are the builders for both. One of the gentlemen I deal with regularly on Parc1 is Samsung's executive director for highrise structures. So he is inolved in both projects. He used to work for SOM.

I'm the lead structural engineer for the basement and substructure for Parc1, which means working out how to hold up twin supertall towers, plus a 100m high hotel hotel and a 40m high shopping mall, all sitting on top of a 40m deep basement structure which takes up a whole city block. Burj Dubai actually looks easy in comparison! It's a greenfield site with a simple, elegant structure founded on a simple (albeit it massive) footing system.

I still haven't found out what that cone-shaped 1001m tall building proposal is. Too busy trying to sort out Parc1!
Hmm, we really need to go out for a beer again my friend?

I wouldn't if I were you. Last time you went to a bar with someone named McKenzie, you ended up making this spectacularly embarrassing post:
