Looking at Ob Deck entrance from Dubai Mall its full steam ahead with many workers going for imminent completion.

Shelves getting filled up with BD merchanding including a BD model in pic.

Oh and thats not a smaller than usual Fillipino girl next to the giant sized BD water flask.

Soon we will have BD logo shirts, jackets, kites, models, condoms etc.

No table reservations when Burj Dubai opens

Restaurants expect to be filled to capacity on opening night

Dubai: The opening of Burj Dubai is expected to attract thousands of visitors, but most managers of restaurants in the surrounding area are refusing to accept reservations.

Restaurants are maintaining their usual policies of no reservations, even though requests are pouring in.

"We can't guarantee reservations since customers will probably not make it on time because of the crowds. We don't want to keep empty tables waiting for them," said Fadi Salloum, restaurant manager at Shakespeare and Co, located across from the world's tallest tower.

"We are not taking any reservations for January 4, especially for the terrace. If I take them, it will be hectic to control them," said Gassan Mezher, branch manager for Scoozi, Dubai Mall.

"We already had too many people asking to reserve but we had to say no," he added.

Extended hours

The restaurant has 64 seats outdoors and 140 inside, and is planning to add 20 more to accommodate more customers.

"We believe the restaurant will be full on the night and our full staff will be on duty," he said.

The restaurant usually closes at midnight, but it will extend opening hours as long as there is business, Mezher said.

Salloum said: "We are taking reservations until 8pm. After that it's first come first served. Forty people have already booked for January 4. These bookings are not guaranteed because every day is already busy."

If all restaurants opened up their reservations for the opening night of Burj Dubai, they would be fully booked by now.

One restaurant taking advanced bookings is Baker and Spice, a restaurant in Souq Al Bahar that faces the Dubai Fountain and Burj Dubai.

"We don't usually take reservations at the restaurant, but we are making an exception for the night of the Burj Dubai opening," said Deejay Delon, restaurant supervisor.

However, customers will have to pay a cover charge for the privilege.

To accommodate the extra customers expected on the night, the restaurant will add almost 30 seats on its terrace.

More seats

"Most of our seats outside are already booked, so we're adding more," he said.

At Dean and Deluca, a cafe facing Burj Dubai, business is on a first come first served basis. "If we were a restaurant and offered a full meal, we might take reservations," said Sinu Joy, manager of the cafe.

Although the night of the opening will bring crowds to the eating establishments, business is expected to increase as offices open in the tower, and business during lunch hour is also likely to increase.

"The fountain has given us a lot of clientele. The Burj will give even more," Joy said.

Wafi Gourmet, another restaurant that offers outdoor seating with a view of Burj Dubai, will not be taking any reservations. "Usually, there are no reservations. The outdoor seating is busy everyday, especially because of the weather," said Esmail Naba'a, manager of the restaurant branch at Dubai Mall.

Hi all.

I know that it doesn't have any effect on the official height, but 824.6+50 is getting awfully close to that magic 888 number...
From what I have ...

824.6 - floor of concourse level to top of beacons
+ 9.25 - raft, B2, and B1 levels
+ 3.7 - concrete raft
+ 43.25 - estimated pile height
= 880.8

The pile prints I have estimate the height. I have heard 49 and 50 for the pile height from various sources (as if they would know ... ). If the piles are 50.45 and that is entirely possible - we would have 888.0.

If going by the press releases means anything Jan 4 is going to be a hell of a party.
All you guys tip one back for me ...
with one hand and snap pics with the other ...

From the local rag:
Quote:
Dubai: A visit to the Burj Dubai site revealed a flurry of activity as construction workers numbering in their thousands put the finishing touches to the tower in preparation for its inauguration on January 4.

"Everyone is working hard to make sure the Burj Dubai and its surroundings are ready for Monday," said M.S. Anwar, the onsite safety officer who estimated the number of workers at 14,000.

Officials at the site revealed that there will be limited space on the Burj Island and the area will feature one retail kiosk and five restaurant kiosks.

Following the cutting of the ribbon, VIPs will be led into the Burj's interior.

The public will not be allowed entry into the building; however, all the activities will be broadcast on a flat screen placed just outside the tower.

After the official tour, there will be an entertainment display combining four elements, including a show by the Dubai Fountain and fireworks display said to be the first of its kind.

More than 1,000 security personnel will be present at the ceremony.

Public invited to watch Burj Dubai inauguration from Burj Park Island

Dubai, UAE; December 31, 2009: Members of the public will be able to watch the inauguration of Burj Dubai on January 4, 2010 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President & Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, from the adjacent Burj Park Island.

The 29,000 sq m park is set on Burj Dubai Lake and will be a spectacular new leisure attraction in Downtown Burj Dubai, the 500-acre ‘mega project’ developed by Emaar Properties and anchored by Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest building.

Overlooking the Waterfront Promenade of The Dubai Mall, Burj Park Island also has a designated area for viewing The Dubai Fountain, and is immaculately landscaped with greenery and ample seating areas.

Visitors to the park on January 4 will be able to witness the inauguration ceremony of Burj Dubai by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, from a special vantage point. The date also marks the fourth anniversary of the Accession Day of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed as the Ruler of Dubai.

Burj Dubai to welcome first residents from February 2010 onwards

Armani Residences to be handed over first followed by The Residences and The Corporate Suites

Dubai, UAE; December 31, 2009: Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest building by Emaar Properties, will receive its first residents as early as February 2010. They will be the first of over 12,000 people who will live and work in the mixed-use tower comprising luxurious apartments, prime office space and the world’s first Armani Hotel, amongst other modern lifestyle amenities.

Following the inauguration of Burj Dubai on January 4, 2010 to mark the fourth anniversary of the Accession Day of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum as the Ruler of Dubai, Emaar will immediately take charge of the property from various consultants, contractors and suppliers. From January 5, the public can access At The Top, Burj Dubai, the world’s highest observation deck on Level 124 of the tower.
