Talking

The fireworks which will be used at the ceremony are said to be the first of their kind.

Well to be fair they could have one guy standing on top with a single firework and it would be a safe bet that had never been seen before what with it being a world record breaking building!

Height of security at launch

Police said strict surveillance will not be a deterrent to enjoy show

* by Zaher Bitar, Staff Reporter
* Published: 00:00 January 1, 2010

Dubai : Tight security around the opening ceremony for Burj Dubai will not prevent the public from enjoying the spectacle, a top security officer told Gulf News.

From a control room in the world's tallest free-standing building, up to 40 surveillance cameras will monitor the surrounding area, where special force teams and snipers will be deployed in case of an emergency. In addition, around 900 plainclothes police will be providing security to the important guests and public attending the ceremony.

Major General Mohammad Eid Al Mansouri, Director of the General Department of Protective Security and Emergency Department at Dubai Police, said: "Our highly trained security teams are stationed in and around the locations and will be on standby for the worst-case scenario.

"I am very proud to be part of securing the opening event of one of the legendary projects in the world, running on January 4 which coincides with the fourth anniversary of accession day of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum as Ruler of Dubai."

A number of state authorities involved in providing safety and security for the event have been meeting and co-ordinating their plans for the past month.

"Our ultimate task is to safeguard lives and protect assets. A big police team is required to be on duty at the time of the opening, while another huge security team will be on standby ready for deployment on short notice," Al Mansouri said.

Monitored

Police officers will be stationed inside and outside Burj Dubai, in a safety zone, while the Old Town area and Dubai Mall will be monitored by surveillance cameras.

The cameras are connected directly to control room and record activities around the clock.

While the police will be plainclothes, traffic officers will be in uniform and stationed on the roads and in parking areas to keep vehicles moving smoothly.

Only the expected 6,000 invited guests will have access to the ceremony at the Burj, through two gates — The Burj and Dubai Mall.

Everyone who has an access to the event, Al Mansouri added: "Will be strictly inspected by our police officers with x-ray and scanning machines."

Al Mansouri advised that: "The public will be able to watch the opening show from any point around the Burj — Dubai Mall, Souk Al Bahar, Old Town — as there will be no block at any entrance points."

There will be four parking areas with space for 7,200 vehicles, the biggest of which is the Dubai Mall parking which can accommodate 5,000 cars. The remaining three are located around the Burj area.

The opening ceremony will be held on Burj Island, which is in the park in front of Burj Dubai.

The event will include the screening of a documentary film about Dubai and the Burj on a giant screen, fireworks, a sound and light show and a parachute display.

Full view

The public will be able to view the ceremony, but only Shaikh Mohammad and his entourage will tour inside the Burj.

The gates will be open to guests from 4 to 8pm, when the ceremony, which is expected to last for two hours, will begin.

A good number of celebrities and VIPs are expected. Al Mansouri, said: "Female and male agents are in our security team. The job of female police is inspection but they are also required to protect female VIPs at the event."

There are plans to evacuate guests and foil attacks on VIP's, based on the situation on the ground.

However, he added: "Dubai is a safe city and we don't expect any terrorist attacks or riots. Moreover, I have enough confidence in our agents; they are experts in rescue, arrest and typical hostage-rescue mission..."

Opening Programme

Gates opened for public at 4pm and close for the entrance of Shaikh Mohammad at 8pm.

Access to the ceremony is only for the 6,000 invited guests.

Ceremony starts with a documentary about Dubai.

Shaikh Mohammad formally inaugurates the Burj.

Fireworks display

Light and sound show

Display by six parachutists

Four parking areas are available for 7,200 vehicles

Hi all.

Happy New Year all.

Still over 4 hours to go here ...

Hi Imre.

Well holy f*** !!
You are a lucky man.
I will get many rags ready for tomorrow - screen and keyboard will need to be wiped off repeatedly I'm sure.

I do have some initial questions while it is fresh in your mind.
What was the exact route you took to the top ?
Did you take the pega lift to section 18B as your highest elevator ?
Were there stairs after that up to a certain section ? What section ?
At what section did you enter the pinnacle pipe ? Were there some ladders before that ?

So the opening will be in stages as I figured in yesterdays post.
The Armani residences in Feb
The Armani Hotel in March.
The Hotel residences, Residences, Luxury residences, and Boutique offices beginning in March and taking from 2 to 6 months.
Finally we have some reasonable dates to go by.

Happy New Year Fury and ALL!

Could you post the draw of the last sections? (from the level 160 would be great)

I can answer better if I see the details
