Who can explain this confusing CTBUH-facts to me?
http://buildingdb.ctbuh.org/?do=building&building_id=3
height 828.00 meter / 2716.54 feet
height to tip 830.00 meter / 2723.10 feet
2 meters difference! This can't be the aircraft beacons on top only!

I think they have measured the height to the standing platform at the top of the pinnacle (the platform you stand with your feet on).

If you calculate the parapet and the beacons, you get an additional 2 meters extra.

film (in swedish tho) from the ceremony

edit: and about the name. I don't think the new name is bad per se. I just think that it was too late to change it, and now everyone is already refering the building as "Burj Dubai". It's aslo easier to remember. I will call it Burj Dubai or "that high tower in Dubai" if I talk to my slow friends

i will call it burj dubai for ever! i think everyone in dubai will call it burj dubai for ever!

actually the name isn't that bad, just the fact that they changed so unforeseen disappoints me...BURJ DUBAI is a brand name like eiffel tower in paris. and now sheikh khafail decorates himself with foreign flowers!! that'S so POOR!!!!!!!

exactly!!

btw: someone posted saying the fireworks werent as good as they had thought (i cant seem to find the post now). to him, i'd like to say: can you imagine standing on the island and looking up over 800m to see fireworks going off, creating what looks like an 800m christmas tree?

i think the splendor of this show was seen by people present there and not on video. would have loved to be there! dang!

Wow finally caught up on the 20+ pages that this thread's generated since the evening (or morning EST here)...

Still letting the videos load from everywhere but THANK YOU to Imre, Desert Diver, 234, Gerald, PG, and everyone else whom has helped to create so much interest in this tower for me and everyone else. All of your photos are greatly appreciated.

On the topic of the name change, my brother simply said that a name is everything. Without the money, you lose your name and so I'm curious to know how literal this silent changing of hands per se is.

Though I prefer Burj Dubai, I know the new name will grow on people with time - however I still hope they keep it "Burj Dubai" somehow.

If it's truly changed in all future things simply on a whim, then I pray they gave a tremendous amount of artisans notification. To change what is and has already been developing as a world icon with world-class marketing potential and tourism to something inherently different (even if just a name), seems like one of the worst possible errors imaginable.

The sign is gone for now sure, but I hope there aren't too many fixed pieces of art that need changes or anything else where the name is more permanently fixed into say, stone or otherwise. Everything from tourism books and traffic guides, to souvineer / gift shops to already so-called "outdated" shirts will suddenly have to scrap their entire lines of products and rebrand them to fix the name. I hope that this is simply a ceremonious rebranding but alas it seems to be official.

All my friends in Chicago still call that big black tower "Sears Tower" even if it's now Willis...

Somehow I think with the world's media watching and the public (along with us fans) having gotten to know this tower as the Burj Dubai, I think that name's going to stick regardless of what they decide to call it now.

i actually kinda feel special now because i was born on august 28th and in america that date is 8/28, which is the height of the burj

but yes, this building is for dubai, not for khalifa. if you are going to name it after a person, name it after His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, i mean without him dubai wouldnt nearly be as amazing as it is today. extremely bad move

Burj Khalifa - The tallest tower in the World

At 828 metres, the Burj Khalifa - called the Burj Dubai during its construction - is the world's tallest skyscraper. It easily beats the world's previous tallest building, the Taipei 101 in Taiwan, which is 508 metres tall. The last time the Middle East was host to the world's tallest free-standing building was in 1311 when the Great Pyramid of Giza was overtaken by the spire of Lincoln Cathedral.

As many as 7,500 people were employed to build the Burj Khalifa, named after the ruler of Abu Dhabi, which bailed out Dubai when it faced its own economic crisis in November. Tthe skyscraper faces an uncertain future. Despite a 50 per cent fall in Dubai's property market almost all of the Burj's 1,044 residential flats, designed by Giorgio Armani, have been sold. However, it is being reported that none of the 28,000 sq m of office space has yet been occupied.
