Come on, the fact that they renamed the burj is terrific news. It means that they think it will look silly to have a small tower called Burj Dubai, when all the buildings arise that they are planning underhand...

I was actually curious as to where Fury went. We have not heard from him at all yet. I think he is in shock.

Burj Khalifa is named after Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi.

Hi all.

I'm here guys - it just took a while to go through all the new pages and load all the pics and vid.

First - let me say the inauguration was fantastic with great coverage by everyone - great show.

Second - the name change for this thread is premature by many months. The Burj was only inaugurated today. The only thing officially completed and open for business is the OD.
- Handover for the Armani residences is in Feb.
- The Armani hotel opens March 18.
- The handover for the hotel residencs, residences, luxury residences, and boutique offices begins in March and will take 2 to 6 months.
This is the latest official word from Emaar.
Mods please change the name back to U/C or inaugurated.

Third - the name change to Burj Khalifa ...
The first thing I thought when someone posted BK is the Burger King Whopper ...
I agree this is very late in the game to officially change the name but I can get used to it I guess - not much choice now. The ramifications could be far reaching as was posted by many.
To me there is a much bigger issue ........

CTBUH Article

Fourth - the height announcement.
- 818.0 is the height as per the plans and is measured from the floor of the ground level to the top of tier 30.
- 824.0 is how I thought the CTBUH would measure - from the floor of the concourse level (which is one level and 6.0 m. below the ground level and has an open-air entrance to the office lobby) to the top of tier 30.

The only way I see 828.0 is if they are including level B1 in the measure. Level B1 is one level below the concourse level and is 4.00 meters high. Perhaps the CTBUH figures it fits the new criteria somehow but I don't see how. Their article does state they are measuring from the concourse level so ... ? Hopefully they give out some info as to where the measure starts and ends.

http://buildingdb.ctbuh.org/?do=building&building_id=3

Also the link above does state 830.0 as the height to tip as Stefan posted. The only possibility I see here is as Dequal posted. The top of tier 30 is where the top platform with the hatch is and the pipe above that (that is the "railing") is an extension. I had kinda ruled this out but is the only thing that makes sense now. The top of the beacons would be 2 meters above the said platform.

I see they do say 162 levels which is as per the plans for the named levels.
The 621.4 to the highest occupied floor measure doesn't add up either. Hopefully they state what level they are referring to.

Lastly these numbers will only be official when the CTBUH looks over the architectural drawings to be supplied by Emaar. I wish they would post the pertinent areas for us to look over as well - not likely.
We should know soon enough.

It's going to be hard to shake the Burj Dubai name. Specially for something that is already so iconic and well known. They can 'officially' name it whatever they want, but show people a picture and I would guess many would call it Burj Dubai.

Ask most people if they know what the Willis Tower is. Probably very few outside of a web forum like this. Ask if they know what the Sears Tower is and you will get tons of people who know.

Este arranha-céu é absolutamente maravilhoso: um marco da engenharia e da capacidade humana, que sempre sonhou em tocar o céu, desde a época mais remota.

name change...

i think that outside of dubai most people will refer too it as simply 'the burj' or perhaps ...' you know the tallest building in the world... you know its called ' the burj in dubai,.

yep thats it .. 'the burj in dubai'
and if you say 'the burj in dubai' fast enough then it'll simply be known as the ... 'BURJ DUBAI'

??? THINK ABOUT IT ???

It doesn't feel historical at all. Rather wayne-like. People never cared less about the new highest building it seems.
