Imdaad happy to waste its time on such a tall order

Gregor Stuart Hunter | Last Updated: August 15. 2010 8:32PM UAE / August 15. 2010 4:32PM GMT

It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it. Imdaad, the facilities management company, has won a three-year contract to manage the domestic waste produced by the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.

Imdaad, which is owned by Dubai World, will be responsible for managing and recycling the waste that amasses every day in the hotels, restaurants and offices throughout the 828-metre tower.

They will also be responsible for taking away the rubbish from 1,044 residential apartments within the 162 stories of the Burj, about as much housing as can be found in a small town. Jamal Lootah, the chief executive of Imdaad, said: “Delivering waste management solutions to one of the world’s most prestigious buildings is something we look forward to with great enthusiasm.”

The deal comes in a period of upheaval and uncertainty for maintenance companies, with a new strata law coming into effect in October that will allow owners to appoint their own management companies for the first time.

Imdaad, one of the largest facilities management companies in the UAE, claims to be the only such company that can perform all levels of waste management in-house without relying on external contractors.

The company said one of its key tasks would be meeting sustainability requirements to cut the carbon footprint of the huge tower.

Dubai is particularly keen on boosting its green credentials following years of frenzied construction, making a point of including environmental sustainability as a key goal of the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015.

Among the Burj Khalifa’s waste management features is a water system that recycles condensation from outside the tower to regulate the temperature of its concrete.

This is used to irrigate botanical gardens, a series of man-made lakes and the world’s largest indoor fountain, all designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

The tower’s water system uses an average of almost 1 million litres of water a day.

Testing out a new lens.

(The pinnacle is almost 2 kilometres away from where that was taken)

Hi all.

Hi PG.

Nice find.
The waste management for the BK would be a giant task. It is just a small part of the entire operations and maintenance jobs though. The design and construction phases are huge things but once a project moves on to operations and maintenance it enters the longest phase of its life cycle by far. It would be interesting to get info on the planning and execution of the running of this structure.

EDIT
HI Gerald.
I just saw your pinnacle shot.
I had to wipe off my screen and keyboard ...
Absolutely the clearest shot of the top ever !!!
Let me scrutinize it before I post more ...
Fantastic - thanks for posting.

Hi all.

Here is Gerald's shot of the top of the pinnacle from today I've labelled.

This is the first shot that clearly shows all the elements since they were installed.
There is an extra element along the East axis that is not in any plans or prints I have - even the recent ones from during the height ratification time. I see the support for it has been up there for a long time though.
Here is a shot from Imre's Dec 09 visit I've labelled, showing it.

I think it is a 2nd sonimometer but as I labelled, it could be an anemometer (as the earlier plans called for) or something else. There also is something sticking out to the left of it in Geralds shot, but that may not be part of the element in question.

Nice to finally see what is actually up there.
Leeds to more questions in my geeky mind though ...

LOL. Not quite. I think that's the 1200mm, yes?

The pinnacle shot was taken with the 300mm f/2.8, along with both 1.4x and 2x converters, for an resulting focal length of 840mm.

I happen to drive by in the Downtown area early in the morning, and all the lights on the tower were turned on, including on the steel structure section. Don't know if it was some kind of test or just a indication that they are working on the interiours of all those still to open sections.
