They should, it should stop being a hobby when you start shooting photographs like that!

Nice to see some of the photographers, and great to see your older like myself! Sometimes I picture the guys here to all be 20 somethings, nice to see that we're all not!

You're absolutely correct ... though that particular pic isn't of any of us.

I wonder how much it costs to sit in that top crow's-nest seat.

China plans Burj Khalifa copy

Quote:
By Ed Attwood | Thursday, 6 January 2011 4:01 PM

Saudi Arabia will help China build a $1.3bn luxury hotel modelled on Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, according to newspaper reports from Beijing.

The People’s Daily Online quoted a senior official as saying that graphics and planning of the ‘seven-star’ hotel had already been completed.

The announcement was made at a press conference on Wednesday.

Wang Hongzhong, chief official of the Mentougou district, where the project is based, said that it had been designed as a “streamlined building like the Khalifa Tower in Dubai”.

The hotel will be situated at the end of Chang An avenue, which runs across the Chinese capital’s Tiananmen Square.

No further details about Saudi Arabia’s role in the project, or a potential completion date, were provided.

Wasn't there a similar story like this a few years back? I vaguely remember that China had plans to build a BK replica, albeit on a much smaller scale of course.

Does the top of the pinnacle rotate?

Here's something odd.

Look at these two snapshots taken from two of my gigapans:

and

Taken from the same location.

(I guess it might just be that they've slightly altered the angle on the beacon facing the camera)

I see your photos and probably you may have right; how and from whom we going to learn if or not the pinnacle rotate?

Hi guys.
Does the top of the pinnacle rotate ?
Absolutely not.

The pinnacle was lifted with strand jacks - not twisted. There were guide wheels to keep it tracking straight up.
When lifting was complete, it was welded in solid - no other movement possible.

Gerald answered correctly. The beacons don't open from the back and must be swivelled to gain access to the openable front panel for servicing. The South beacon (the one facing us)was adjusted a few degrees between April and October (the dates of the 2 shots) for whatever reason.

Here are 2 of Imres shots from 09 12 31 to illustrate.

Shows the latches on the front panel. As we can see it must be swivelled.

The camera bag is hanging on the lightning rod on the North side. On the right we can see the 4 bolt flanges for the beacon at ~60 degrees using compass headings. The bottom 1/2 of the flange is attached to the 2 1/2 inch solid rod we can see on the bottom that is attached to the pinnacle. That extends 18 inches above the flange. The top 1/2 of the flange is attached to the 3 inch pipe we can see on the top that is attached to the beacon and is slid over the 2 1/2 inch rod. ie: the smaller/lower solid rod is inside the larger/upper pipe. They pull the 4 bolts allowing the beacon to swivel with no chance of it falling down (it would have to be lifted 18 inches for it to fall). Then change the bulb (or whatever), swivel back, and do up the bolts. Low tech but effective.

As for the new permanent direction it is pointing ... that would involve some cutting and welding as I see it. Probably took the beacon off and removed the frame, hauled it down some tiers and repositioned the top flange half ?

Ray.
