Though, dust is indeed a problem and is made worse by the excessive humidity throughout the year, especially on buildings facades.

'Spiderman' headed to top of Burj Khalifa

The National staff

Last Updated: Mar 24, 2011

"Spiderman" will scale the world’s tallest building.

Alain Robert, 48, popularly known as the “French Spiderman”, announced today he would scale the Burj Khalifa on Monday.
Mr Robert is a well-known rock climber famed for climbing skyscrapers without a harness or safety brackets. He estimated it would take him up to seven hours to scale more than 160 storeys (828 metres). He is expected to start the climb at 4pm.

The climb is part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of Education Without Borders (EWB), an international student conference that will take place in Dubai this year.
As part of the 2003 EWB conference, Mr Robert climbed the National Bank of Abu Dhabi building in view of almost 100,000 spectators. In 2005, he climbed the 160-metre Etisalat building in Abu Dhabi. For the 2007 EWB, he climbed the 185-metre ADIA building, also in Abu Dhabi.

At the Burj Khalifa, Mr Robert said he would set an example and exercise caution: he will use a foot harness and rope as he scales the world’s tallest free-standing skyscraper.

Hi all.

Awesome news to hear spidey will climb the Burj.
Resorting to a rope and safety harness (at Emaars request) - probably a wise move. A member of the safety team on each 'ledge' - so a dozen guys ?
A half mile vertical climb - for a 48 year old - wow.

Looking forward to Monday - there will be much video, pics, and info.

Hi all.

Rather than edit my post above, because this is a completely different topic, I will use a different post.

A question to our Dubai forumers and any one else who has an educated opinion. Altin, Imre, Sale, Gerald, Paris - so many others that have posted here regularly (sorry - I can't recall everyone's names).

What, in your opinion, is the construction status of the Burj Khalifa ?

Do you think it is :
1 - Fully complete and fitted out (with the office space done core and shell) ?
2 - Almost finished with some small fitout work left - say, a month or 2 left ?
3 - Still major work going on for many months yet ?

I see in night shots there are no areas with many lights on anymore as there was when there was likely lots of work happening. This could mean they are only working during the day of course but I am thinking the residential areas are in fact complete now. In the recent night shots there are lights on here and there in all the residential areas which seems to correspond to the number of occupied units - 15 or 20 % by now. If the office area isn't done now it must be getting close - by done I mean just the work Emaar will be doing, as the fitout will be done by the tenants for the most part.

Therefore my response to my question above has been at #2 for some time now and I am now leaning towards #1. We won't hear any news on completion, yet I want to nail down an approximate date when the completion of the whole of the works milestone is achieved for this project. Perhaps with your help we can accomplish this together.

Thanks all.

Ray.

I say, #1 or maybe 2. This building reminds me of the Empty State Building of the 30's and 40's...

You will not see any changes from outside. The building should be in the completed section. It was a great time. But now it`s time to move on.

Is this a metaphor regarding the Empire State Building when it was built?

I did not know the ESB was vacant when it was built. I suppose because of the Great Depression?

Interesting poll / question for Burj Khalifa status. I believe mostly #1 and in some occasions especially for the high levels #2.

Attn: Fury/Gerald Do we have elevator info - pics etc ?

Do we have pics etc of the control panels for the Armani Hotel elevators - the group of 4 that serve floors 5 to 8? can we see what all this group serves?

We've seen most of the others - is there somewhere showing all of this in one place?

Also, must be a couple of years ago when Imre got his preview tour of the inside - we had a video of the service lift BS-3 that runs from 138 to 160.
At that time early on, I estimated its speed at 1.6 meters per second based on the movement of floor numbers in the video.

Sury its speed is much higher than that - does anyone have any of the specs or videos showing how fast these lifts move - we have seen one of the OB1 lift going from 1 to 124 - any others ??

Thankyou gentlemen.
