A question to our Dubai forumers and any one else who has an educated opinion. Altin, Imre, Sale, Gerald, Paris - so many others that have posted here regularly (sorry - I can't recall everyone's names).

What, in your opinion, is the construction status of the Burj Khalifa ?
There is no question - at least, to me - that the building is "as" complete as any other on these forums that gets moved to a completed section.

As far as I'm aware, no other building is held back from moving to complete simply because the internal fit-out is unfinished.

We've seen most of the others - is there somewhere showing all of this in one place?

Also, must be a couple of years ago when Imre got his preview tour of the inside - we had a video of the service lift BS-3 that runs from 138 to 160.
At that time early on, I estimated its speed at 1.6 meters per second based on the movement of floor numbers in the video.

Sury its speed is much higher than that - does anyone have any of the specs or videos showing how fast these lifts move - we have seen one of the OB1 lift going from 1 to 124 - any others ??

Thankyou gentlemen.
Hi Library.

I have no shots of the panels for those lifts, or any info on speeds other than the OD lifts.

Here's what I do have.

The only 4 panel shots I have.

There are 7 lifts that go up to level 39. H1 to H4 and HA1 to HA3.

Here is a drawing of the hotel lifts.

We can see one set serves (the set you are asking about) Ground, 1, 3, 5-16, 18, 38, 39. I presume this would be H1 to H4 since it serves the hotel and the Armani residences.

That leaves HA1 to HA3 as the other set we see in the drawing. The panel for them is above showing the levels they serve - the Armani residences and the hotel residences. The drawing has an error for this set as it shows them serving the Concourse level. I have a good drawing of the Concourse and none of the 7 hotel lifts go down there.

The low set in the drawing are HP1 to HP4.

Good to see your still around Library. It's enjoyable to have some technical discussion.

What's your take on the construction status ?

Hi Gerald.

True, most do get get moved prematurely IMO. The completed sections should be for projects that are fully completed. Also there should be a completed section instead of little areas here and there or using the ROT setion as a completed section.
With that said I'm happy to see this project is remaining here.
- It's not complete
- The inauguration wasn't the opening
- It's the WTS and the project of a lifetime
I know most get moved before their opening ceremony but as I said, that is premature IMO.

Anyway, my question you quoted has nothing to do with where this thread is located in this forum. I was looking for educated opinions on whether the BK is fully completed, or not.

I haven't seen any people in the pool on top of 'The Club' so I don't think that is completed and open yet and hopefully there will be some press on that aspect. That is one of the reasons I haven't gone ahead and called this project fully completed yet.

About those elevators: someone who wants to go from ground level to 93th floor need to change elevators from ground to 39th, from 39th to etc etc until reaches the 93th floor, or it is possible (in one elevator) directly to go from ground level to 93th floor?

Hi all.

Hi Imre.

Great historical shots and vids.
The sign, "Please don't lean on the door !!!" always cracks me up.

Hi Christos.

Level 93 is in the luxury residential zone. The route is via an express elevator from the ground level to 76 skylobby, then a second elevator to 93.

On another note.
The decision to move this thread (when it's made) won't be the end of the world ...
I like it here untill the project is fully complete but it really doesn't matter to me.
I will continue to post in one or more of the BK threads.
- this thread will likely be in the archive section
- the completed thread in the UAE section
- a new thread in the ROT section

It would be so much easier if they just had a keypad to insert the number of the floor you want go to, rather than having all those buttons!

Burj Khalifa

Actually to be honest looking through some of these pictures I like it more than I thought. It really sets a hard record to be beat. Although by observation deck the Shanghai WFC already has it beat
I'm sure it'll see a good 10 years of reign or so as tallest before a more useless building like India Tower beats it in both height and pointlessness.

Hi Miami.
True SWFC has a higher indoor OD - the BK still has the record for the highest outdoor. Of course the BK won't hold all its records forever. I agree it really did up the bar by a long ways and it will be at least 10 years before another project surpasses its height.

As a skyscraper lover I don't see any supertall to be useless or pointless, especially the current WTS. No structure has to be supertall - there is some ego involved in them all but they all add residential and/or office space to their cities. Also they are all planned to be profitable at some point. As for spires and pinnacles, I think most, if not all, tall structures look better with them. The design of the BK with its spiralling setbacks needs the spire and pinnacle to finish it off to a point. Far from useless IMO.

As for the India Tower, I like the design. It will be an awesome achievement for India but at 720 meters it won't be overtaking this structure.

Lastly perhaps you can teach me something.
What does tiasd stand for ?
I'm not much of a smiley guy - anyone ?

tiasd
Dude I was wondering the same thing!
I don't know I just found it in the smilies thing. If you click more there's a whole bunch of neat ones, like this:
Badnews:

And of course I wasn't refering literally to the India Tower, just one like it. Speaking of which I really don't get the renders of it at all. Is it a monument? I see no windows and no reason behind the shape. At its size that shape would put fairly large area's walls past the zero point (straight up). Also how could it possibly be so high and only 125 floors? That's a trend I don't get with a lot of these new supertalls. It's like they want height but they're scared of having too many floors.

BTW are you raime or timsdad or astronaut on wikipedia?

you can't argue with that. Dubai has taken a lot of flack in recent years, but that is one hell of a skyline they've created in no time at all, and a unique one in my opinion. They've created something new and futuristic there, with it's jaggedy asymmetric lines, a whole world apart from the first real skylines we became accustomed to such as the boxy NYC. Well done.

Here are some shots of the 'old city' skyline for comparison.... much more traditional and boxy as you can see, though still pretty interesting, albeit comprised of mid-rise towers, instead of supertalls

An hour to go for Spiderman to begin ascent of Burj Khalifa

Alain Roberts to go ahead with death-defying stunt despite high wind speeds

By Joseph GeorgePublished Monday, March 28, 2011

Alain Roberts (Joseph George)

The unusually high wind speed being witnessed across the UAE and particularly at Burj Khalifa will not hamper this evening’s attempt to scale the world’s tallest tower, Alain ‘the Spiderman’ Robert told Emirates 24|7 on the eve of his astounding attempt.

Roberts said that he plans to start his climb at around 4.30pm and will complete it in six to seven hours.

“It is a bit windy. I realised it last night and bought a new wind stopper. It is going to be a bit tough but I should be able to handle it,” said Roberts, who will set a new record after he scale the 828-metre high tower.

When asked if this was the first time he would be using a protective safety harness he said, “I have done it before as well. They usually ask me to do so for commercial climbs. I have a special relationship with the UAE and know people here. Therefore, there is no need for me to do the climb in secret,” he said.

'Spider-Man' prepares to climb Burj Khalifa

DUBAI // A Frenchman who has achieved fame by scaling the world's tallest buildings without ropes has been counting down to this afternoon's attempt to climb the Burj Khalifa with a safety harness.

Alain Robert, who calls himself 'the French Spider-man' was due to begin his climb up the 828-metre spire at 4.30pm and expected to finish it in about six hours. After darkness falls, he will be guided by a spotlight.

The safety harness was a condition for being granted permission to climb the landmark, which has been his ambition long before the building was completed at the start of last year.
