Why would you think it wouldn't be there for more than 50 years, it will be there for centuries most likely.

Because maybe in 50 years storms will be more fierce, and the tower as it is right now would not be able to withstand the pressure from high winds, etc. Just speculating, though.

The progress in the Burj Dubai has been big especially with placing of the clading. When I see pics of the clading with sun light, it looks awsome.

As others have said already.

This building is going to be around for a long time; a hell of a lot longer than 50 years.

It will hold up just fine to any storm that blows through the area. Skyscrapers actually have a great track record when it comes to fierce storms.

Are they still working piece by piece or are they changing in big prefabricated pieces of many steal beams? As the first crucial floors have been made it's time to speed up I hope

Arcelor-Mittal only supplies the materials (tubes and sections). The Malaysian company that is building the spire on top of the concrete section (Eversendai), cuts and prepare them in their own yards in Dubai.

BTW, most of the steel sections (the hallow tubes) are actually manufactured in Korea by a third, third party since Arcelor couldn't manufacture them in their own plants.

Everything is done piece by piece (more or less), you can't haul up there entire pre-fab sections. But yeah they did speed up with this 3rd steel level.

As a structural engineer, can I please clear this up so we don't have to waste any more space discussing it. Two key points:

1) Structures are designed for two sets of loading - serviceability and ultimate capacity. A 1 in 50 year wind is a serviceability loading. An ultimate loading might be a 1 in 500 year wind or up to 1 in 2000 years for a very important structure. Serviceability design is just to ensure that the building behaves in a reasonable manner under loads that can be reasonably expected to occur - ie, minimal cladding damage and minimal disruption to occupants. So it relates primarily to building movements. Ultimate design is to make sure the building doesn't collapse and no-one gets hurt in a more extreme event. Every structural engineer keeps ultimate and serviceability design very clearly defined and separate - don't get the two things confused!

2) You have made the classic mistake that people often make when they aren't trained in statistics. A 1 in 50 year wind doesn't mean that it will occur every 50 years and therefore once the building has stood for 50 years it will suddenly be subjected to this load! What it means is that in any 50 year period there is a certain probability (usually 95% or something similar) that a certain windspeed will be exceeded. It is based on a normal distribution which is developed from previously collected data. You might go for 100 years without such a wind and you might go for only 1 year - it is based on what is highly probable. I suggest getting a text book on statistics and reading up on this if you want to understand how probabilty works.

Sorry if the above sounds condescending, but it has been frustrating over the years to read posts on this thread saying things like 'the tower is going to fall down' or 'I think the engineers haven't thought of (insert random thing)'. We are highly trained professionals whose every day task is to investigate and address the structural behaviour of buildings. You can rest assured that this structure has almost certainly been designed with a far greater level of scrutiny than most others.
