If you count the cranes it is already the highest freestanding structure ever built.

Even without the cranes it still is the highest freestanding structure (not counting Petronius platform, which I maintain is not freestanding since buoyancy holds it up). If you count the cranes, it is the highest structure ever built, freestanding or otherwise.

yes masts are flimsy structures held up by guyed wires, not really comparable to a solid structure like a skyscraper or tower for that matter. also comparing to oil platforms is silly, as they would collapse if it wasnt for the water holding them up.
as far as im concerned Burj Dubai became worlds tallest structure when it pippped the 553m CN Tower.but you do look up to a radio mast top so it is impressive especialy when its over half a km high.

Now that the glass cladding is beginning to cover the building we see that this is a lovely structure: tall, slender, modern and soaring. I like it very much. It pains me that some major skyscrapers out there are UGLY. However, to those of you having orgasms in your pants at the great height of this structure I wish to remind you that a few other supertalls are almost as tall and I do believe in a very short period of time - less than ten years, I predict - this one will be surpassed by another taller building.

Construction already has begun on one, and chatter this month suggests that another one is very close behind.

Al Burj is the one that is under construction. But apparently the one in Kuwait is about to be launched.
