Hi all.

I would like to discuss this rumour about the spire height being adjustable. I have gone over all the info I have and I see nothing adjusable about it. I'm thinking it comes from journalists mistaking the plan to jack up the spire with the spire being permanantly jackable. The plan calls for room to be left for the jacking equipment then after the jacking is done to fill in and finish the space. When all is said and done everything looks bolted / welded solid.

Any thoughts anyone ?

I agree with you Fury
When they complete the jacking up of the spire, they will have to clear out the equipment and finalise any things such as accessing light beacon and connecting to the rest of the building infrastructure etc. So yes, when it is all finish i'm sure everything would have to be bolted/welded in solid.
Also to have a jackable spire would seem a little dodgy and unfair towards calculating its height and comparing it to other buildings. It just wouldn't be right to have a spire that can change its height to be taller than another building, and i'm sure Emaar know that Al Burj is most likely going to be built and would most likely be much taller than the Burj Dubai anyway.
Furthermore, I don't think that Emaar would like to design the tower with an adjustable spire as it would bring about a little controversy and in a way overshadow the beauty and vision of the Burj Dubai - not one where it has to be the tallest building in the world for a million years, but one where it is remembered as being a great human engineering feat, a tower that is comparable to the ESB in prestige and honour, and a tower that becomes a new symbol of hope and an icon of Dubai. :

I think it would be far too difficult to keep the spire permanently jackable. Cladding must be taken away and a permanent (heavy) crane should be installed to get material up and in the building. And more technical stuff, but technically it would be a nice problem to solve for the technicians though. However, I think a real architect wants to create buildings which have one form, not shorter, not longer, not wider, not thinner, just the one form that he think is perfect for its concept. Maybe the architects opinion is not very important compared to the willing to rise to record heights, but this are my two thoughts against a permanently jackable spire, although it's sure nice to discuss it!

yes/ thats just the silly illinformed media. yes the pinnacle will be adjustable BUT only when its being jacked into final position. after it reaches full height,. it will be screwed into permanent position.

The original plans were for cladding up to 90th floor to be completed by the end of 2007. They started work very late ... 6 months ... 9 months ... 1 year after they should had, and reached that specific target with just around 1 - 1.5 months delay.

and they will even increase the speed, because the higher they get the less panels per floor they need to fix.

He's back! Thanks for the pics and keep 'm coming!

What are that holes for in the cladding on top of a tier. And the things that come out of the cladding on the row above the tier? Do you get the question? :S

"the things that come out of the cladding on the row above the tier" are the holders for glaspanels which will be used as balustrates.

The holes ontop of a tier are the openings for doors.

You guys really seem to struggle hard when Imre does not update for more than three days, hehe. I think they should start cladding above 4th mech floor soon.

Thanks for the pictures Imre.
