First. I am not trying to start a flame here. But just how safe if Dubai for Americans and my sweetheart who is from Ireland? I believe it is one thing to be an American in the middle east... (not cared for) but an American from California in the middle east? Ouch! Even People from other parts of the United States do not like Californians!

I do want to visit Dubai as skyscrapers are my passion. Obviously Dubai is in the big-time now as far as skyscrapers go. So what is the security like there? I was told you cannot jaywalk without the police coming down on you and that they are very strict in controlling malcontents and/or not letting them into the country in the first place. How true is this?

In any event we have plans to head to Dubai in June. I plan on taking thousands of photos of the skyscrapers and if all goes well will return yearly to see the progress. We plan on heading to Hong Kong for holiday after Dubai so pics from there as well...

Anyone have some good tips and what/where to visit while I am in Dubai? (Skyscraper viewing aside)... I would love to hire a driver for the full week that I am there also... any suggestions?

*** Mods: I hope this post is within the scope of thread... if not my apologies...
Its very very safe

I can't help but think about what will happen to Dubai when the oil supply dries up.

Oh well. I suppose they can always use an abandoned city as the setting for some futuristic movie. It will look great in TV commercials, too...

Wow, wow, wow. This is so impressive, thank god im not one of the builders on the picture in post #6350. I cant wait to visit Dubai, i might wait a few years until many of the massive developements are finished off and the place looks a little more complete.

Someone mentioned in a post above that Dubai is reliant on oil, but it is rapidly switching to a service based society, and will be sustainable in that sense in certain period of time, not mention Dubai has so much money invested globally and internally, it has alot to fall back on for such a small province/ nation.

Dubai only relies on oil for 5% of its GDP (and it is shrinking each year). Next time you would like to comment about something, please check your facts first. Thank you.

Interesting. And what does it rely on for the rest of its GDP? Just curious...

Off the top of my head tourism, finance and real estate are strong drivers nowadays. But broader speaking the service sector is the major component of the economy like most western states.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy..._Arab_Emirates

Actually the oil accounts for just 3 % as of last year. And as for the person who asked about safety; Dubai is one of the safest cities in the world. You'll be a lot safer than walking the streets of L.A.

Edit: Trade, manufacturing & financial services seems to be the correct answer

Well, I did some research. This is what I could find about Dubai's economy. I could not get full details, although I am sure it is out there somewhere.

Dubai's economy:
Oil:
2000 - 10% (source1)
2005 - 5.4% (source2)
2006 - 3% (source1) or 5.1% (source2)

Non-oil:
2000 - 90% (source3)
2003 - 93% (source3)

Tourism - 30% (of total GDP in 2007) (source4)

By sector (average 1999-2003): (source3)
Primary (agriculture, fishing, livestock, mining, quarrying): 9% (-4% between 1999 and 2003)
Secondary (manufacturing): 16% (constant between 1999 and 2003)
Tertiary (services): 75% (increase 1% per year between 1999 and 2003)

Dubai in the UAE Economy:
In 2006, Dubai was only 28% of the total UAE GDP, but was 43% of all non-oil GDP. (source2)

And here is some detailed information of Dubai's GDP in 2005 (I think; it is all in Arabic and I do not speak Arabic): http://www.dm.gov.ae/DMEGOV/OSI/webr...209AS05-07.pdf

Actually, they will use progressively smaller cranes until the final one can be dismantled and brought down through service elevator.
