More likely up. Making it shorter than the most widely accepted estimate would probably damage their image.

By the way, just a stupid question... Wouldn't it be easier and faster to prefabricate the floors on the ground and then lift the whole thing up with a helicopter, then have workers up there fix it to the building?

I just don't think it would be physically possible to line up and connect dozens of beams all at once. And there probably isn't a helicopter powerful enough to lift something that heavy. The Chinook can lift tanks (say 40-80 tons) but I would wager that an entire prefabricated floor like the ones on the Burj Dubai would way far more than that. You also have to consider wind at that height. It might be too difficult to control something that big if the wind is strong.

Update 28th April

1st Mechanical floor nears cladding completion

Cullwulla, crane still based on same level, I think it was just the angle of the pic.

Altin: Lake hotel not topped out yet (see thread)

Ok...
will the two cranes currently sitting at the top be extended to a greater height and hence continue working on the structure, or have they reached their maximum height?

When will see the dismantling process of the two cranes to pave way for the smaller crane that will finish the steel structure?

Also what do you guys make of the top end of the structure in this pic:

is it just the angle of the pic or does the top end appear to have undergone a dramatic decrease in width?

...or maybe its just me

they should top out this baby to reach the aim of finishing the cladding works until 31.oct 2008 according to bikes website www.burjdubaiskyscraper.com. After that date i have no idea what else will/should be finished, i am preety sure that the annexes will be finished, maybe the landscaping on ground will begin, the hotel rooms could be finished, maybe the lobbies will be finished....

Very nice progress. It's going to look good when the mechanical floors are cladded and cladding is all the way up to the steel structure.
