didn't count the floors on the shot, couldn't imagine that they're that slow with the 11th floor. we all thought the steel would be much faster

I don't think the wind speed or height of the progress will have much effect on slenderness of the tower, meaning that the progress of the tower near the top will become increasingly faster as tier changes.

Wind speed has enormous impact on speed of construction, they lost 18 days due to strong winds in May.

almost definately not. Not from the mainland anyway. (maybe from one of the islands in the gulf.)
It has been mentioned several times that the BD an be seen from about 100 Km on a perfect day.
Iran is about 140Km (84 Miles) (the actual mainland, not the big island, is about 150Km (90 Miles)

By mattbennett at 2008-06-12

this is not taking into account mountains, so it still might be possible.

The burj dubai is looking amazing, can't wait for it to finish.

If there are tall mountains on the Iranian side and assuming a perfect weather scenario I say yes it may be possible.

Well, my first post here, after years of reading and enjoying news and amazing pictures about this building. Despite out of my balcony at home there is an amazing view of the Petronas towers, I am afraid I cannot provide anything related to towers or other structures to this community. However, my work interests led me to perform some calculations related to the question about the visibility of Burj Dubai from Iran.

On a perfect sphere of radius R the horizon distance of a point at altitude h is given by d=sqrt[(R+h)^2-R^2] assuming h small with respect to R. This gives us d=91km for h=650m (present height of BD), d=102km for h=818m (the whole aircraft beacon still visible when BD is complete). This is the distance from which BD is visible at sea level.

However, from another elevated point, the visibility distance is bigger, and precisely equal to the sum of the two horizon distances (at least in theory, neglecting the lack of transparency of the atmosphere...).
After a quick search on GoogleEarth I found a mountain in Iran, a bit inland, whose height is h=1734m with a horizon of 148km (it is located in 27deg07'56".57N, 54deg42'25".21E). The distance from BD is 222.35km, while the sum of the two horizons is 239km now, 250km at BD completion.

So yes, from that mountain in Iran BD is already visible. The portion of the tower above h=450m is visible from up there.

Not bad for your first post. I'd tend to agree with that. If you did similar calculations regarding the visibility of the CN Tower in Toronto across the lake in New York State, you'd reach similar conclusions.

The CN Tower is very visible from the USA. BD is taller than the CN Tower, and the distance across the water greater, but simply relating the experience here with the measurements involved in the 2 examples, one can acknowledge that your conclusion is probably accurate.

Even if all the Iranian land was flat and the visuality was the clearest ever recorded, its impossible because of the curvature of the earth as well. The tower has to be like 2500 metres tall to be seen probaly.
