It looks like there's more columns on top of the 11th steel floor from this angle. Or is it just the confusing angle, cos 11th steel floor bearly progressed.

No, you are one of many people that do not like the Burj Dubai. Some people hate the height, others hate the design, some hate the cladding, others hate the location.

Like I tell everyone who does not like the building, it is best to wait until it is complete and occupied before you make up your mind. This is what I am doing. I do not hate the Burj Dubai, but I do not like it. I will wait until I see a completed version and some interior shots before I decide whether this building was a good investment or not. Only time will tell.

Just wait until it's complete , and also the surroundings, because they play a major role for a landmark to look right. BJ is a gorgeous structure, and still would be even it were twice shorter, thats how great the design is. I am sure your opinion will change in a year or so.

Great Building get a nice fountain.

Are the skyscrapers next to the BD (the three buildings left from BD in the image in Post #7928) under construction or under preparation?

I also dislike the design of Burj Dubaj, it's not ugly but of course not beautiful. I like at most Russia Tower in Moscow.

I cannot understand how one can find this design ugly. I have to admit that the first renders of the shorter versions didn't look so decent, but I think that the 819m version just looks perfect in terms of proportions. I also think that the design is really original and I like the islamic influences in the design (when you see the building shape from above).I agree though that one could have implemented new technologies in the building for lighting (just thinking of LED technology) so it could have set new standards, redefining everything what has been there before (although it is still/already a revolution in the history of skyscraper construction in so many aspects). Just imagine that the facade would work like a giant screen, or displaying light shows as you have never seen before on a building. I also think it is a pity that apparently the building doesn't make use of green technologies such as photovoltaic panels. Think about all the possible surface that could generate electricity. Wind would be another possible power source, especially up on the spire - it would have been easy to install generators/turbines on/in it. A country with a climate like Dubai should really care more about green technology. I really dont want to think about the power consumption of all the skyscrapers there, once they're finished. So much unused potential and yet so many fantastic projects. People should just be aware that renewable energy is a key technology of the future that is also representing a whole economic sector besides of its positive effects on the environment, but this is a different story, too political for this topic.
So, to sum it up, I still think that Burj Dubai is one of the greatest projects of our time and if you compare its desing to projects like Al Burj (at least the renders we all know) it is by far looking better than this or anything comparable (not to mention the Jeddah milehigh tower - which I think is nothing but ugly).

I find the design outmost beutiful and inspiring. The unique and innovative shape of it breaks construction boundries and make it look like nothing before. It stretches towards the sky among a coming forest of skyscrapers in one of the coming great cities of the world.

Ofcourse everyone has different tastes. Some don't like tall buildings at all. Some find all manmade things 'ugly'. I'm not here to judge that. But from a skyscraperfans point of view this can hardly, ever, be called a downright ugly building.

I think it is a masterpiece!

No, I'm sure you aren't the only person who finds the Burj Dubai "ugly" (Personally I find it beautiful so far), as there are plenty of other cookie cutter buildings in its surrounds which are pretty plain and mundane. Besides, it hasn't even been finished yet, but I guess you are judging it being ugly on the many renders and the multitude of construction pics that have been posted to date.

The glass looks top-notch to me and the forms of the building so far are fantastic.

BTW Thanks to all the forumers that have been supplying construction pics throughout. Much appreciated!!

I like the building, and I love skyscrapers in general, but I dont think the design is really that special. I think Dubai has so much more it can do, look at the designs of some of the other buildings we are seeing, albeit not of as large a scale.
For a scraper of this magnitude, it should have been ground breaking in all aspects of asthetics, not just height.
It has been amazing seeing it rise and rise, and rise some more, but I will wait to see it finished to make a final judgement.
