Where will the cladding stop? Obviously at the top of the spire there is no cladding. At some stage it is too thin for cladding otherwise it would look daft.

Are you asking whether the building's height changes about half a meter with temperature? If so, interesting question. Structures such as bridges expand and shrink with change in temperature. These have expansion joints to prevent buckling and cracking.

I imagine it's not much of an issue for completed skyscrapers, since the internal temperature is held fairly constant with heating and air conditioning. But I'm sure Burj Dubai currently sees a significant diurnal temperature variation. (Even more so before the cladding was added.) But then again, concrete and steel have a high heat capacity, so the bulk of it may not have time to change temperature significantly as the air changes temperature from day to night and night to day. Areas of the building that get direct sunlight would change the most, but most of the main vertical support columns and walls are inside near the center.

Of course the telescopic spire will not be cladded in glass panels. There have been articles dealing with the cladding and how the top will be cladded. It will be in aluminum panels but where they'll start exactly I don't remember.

Hey Skytrax.

Tall Tower will be built since Imre Solt went to the suspected site off where the tower will be and they are prepping up the grounds there for TT. Hell, Imre even saw the name off the building they would build there and it clearly read Al Burj.

But your thoughts about it are understandable since AB/TT would have been halfway by now iff it was to be built at the palm.

Now with so much location changes. Name changes even. 3, 4 or even 5 years after those plans where unveiled, still no building so i understand the doubts about it but it will get built sometime in the near future!

Cheers

thanks for snaps otr.
tier20 has now been reached and crane tip on longer crane is no about 733m high.
the lower crane on tier9 or lev99 is now 77 floors below higher crane cabin on top of tower.
Ive also added the external work lift which starts at tier11 and extends over 200m up tower.

We know that, but we don't know the "taller then what" figure Al Abbar was referring to. For all we care, he might very well be referring to the 750 figure.

Plus we all know, that to keep the investors happy and the share prices stable, they had to come up with a credible reason for the 9 months delay.

I still believe no major height increase has happened, maybe they can extend the spire a little longer, but that's it.

BTW, this morning the dust/sand had settled and the blue skies had returned. It felt nice to see again the tower from a far away distance ... and it looked great.

Does the lower half of the spire serve as the core for what's build around it?
If not, then why does it start as low as at 675m ?

dont even say that, 750m figure should not even be there anymore. its been said by adrian smith that it will be equivalent to 200 stories. thats more then 750m. thats in the 800m+ range

Like I said, the foundations were laid to take a 950m tower, so it's bound to be close to that.
