Dubai Traffic

There is no question that Dubai's skyscrapers will be astounding. There is one obvious question that I have regarding city - traffic. The available office and housing space will grow as perhaps 5 times in the next decade. One simple thought comes to mind as I look at pictures of Dubai. Will they have enough roads? The plan is set. It just seems like there are not enough roads to move all the people who will be occupying all those buildings. From what I have read, the traffic is already terrible. Am I missing something? What were they thinking?

Hi all.

Here is # 20 in my pic to plan comparison since we have reached the top of another tier.

Thanx to Imre for the newest round of great pics.

The last pic in Imres post above really shows just how tall each 6.4 m. level is when compared to people.

Like most places in the world. They didn't think about the traffic! When you have the option to sell a square KM for 100 million or build roads that will cost you 5 million. Most countries, businesses etc, choose the first option.

Why are people still insisting that these are oil dollars at work, since it is a well known fact that Dubai's economy is not based on petroleum any more. Are we just so ignorant that we automatically associate rich middle-eastern with oil? Also compare Dubai's 240,000 barrels/day to US's 7,610,000 barrels/day production.

Quote:
"...revenue from petroleum and natural gas currently account for less than 6 (or 3)% of the emirate's (Dubai) gross domestic product"
