Burj Dubai will probably be topped-out by New Years Day 2009 and totally finished August-October 2009. From what I've been reading on this thread so far.

Hope I'm correct.

Am I?

Are you referring to a specific building, or just in general?

Great looking tower, but why did they have to build the immense footprint? Its like 6 times the size of the tower. Its obviously not for a structural purpose, the chicago spire isn't going to have the footprint dubai has. The size of the footprint really isolates the building. Its really unfriendly to pedestrians because of its isolation. It just kind of bothers me.

That's the part of the design.

We shall see. For now, build on! It's not like the earth has finite natural resources anyway, right?
Fantastic, simply fantastic. Thank you.

Totally photoshopped by stretching the BD to make it look tall. LOL

Everything else around it is as it looks except for the blur.

Why would I want to photo shop anything related to the BD as the intention is to show exactly what it all about. This is not a photo art thread.

Mark, you described the settings exactly as it was.

This building is one of a kind. I am happy that during the past 4 years I was able to observe its construction, from start to finish. Glad to witness history rising. Can't wait for the spire and to see the light effects after the building's completion.

It might be upsettign to hear, but this guy is right.
On this point, skyscrapers are only more environmentally friendly when they are built in well connected urban centres, close to public transport so that people don't have to drive to and from them. This might be an incredible lookign building from afar which is all it's about, but it's one of the most suburban skyscrapers in the world. With all that glass too, it's going to need its own power plant to keep it cool and pump water to the top.
Dubai is a big experiement, But I do think there will be lots of interestign work for urban designers, architects and planners in the future, retrofitting an urban city, for people to walk around, with open streets, around the base of all the towers

Yeah, thats what i don't like... they hardly have any walking in the city. Nothing to do at the base of the towers unlike NYC in which you can walk around the city, go get some coffee ect. The urban planning in Dubai doesn't allow for that with a few exceptions (Deira, Bur Dubai). Although I like the city (Urbanization and Greenery), the walking part is just terrible. Why can't they look at Abu Dhabi, which has a pretty good Urban design and density like NY. I hope Business Bay allows for that to happen. If the weather was cooler during the summer, it would have been a whole different story i suppose.

The downdraught from towers is annoying in most cities, but here it could channel cooler air through new streets keeping them cool. I can see long straight, deep and shaded streets radiating away from these towers with strong cool wind blowing along them from the towers. Thats definitely somethign that could be experimented with

You shouldn't compare Burj Dubai to the stock scraper in NY City! It's an iconic building, a world wonder and as such it has to stand on a open plaza like the big cathedrals in Europe.
The arena like construction around makes it look rather imperial than suburban.

Let me guess: Dubai will continue to grow exponentially and indefinitely and be the most lavish and successful city in the world with a population of one hundred million and seven-thousand-foot towers and an indoor ocean and a lunar colony and real castles and princesses and dragons and no pollution, congestion, poverty, or strain on energy sources.

Informed. Realistic.
what is your problem?

naive. trying too hard to be critical.
