Stop picking on people girl. Unlike the young (dubai)Flo, OTR has his own place and it overlooks the Burj itself.

I'm not sure if this is part of the building itself, but when are they going to fill up the Burj Dubai lake?

Transformer blast triggers fire at Burj site

Transformer blast triggers fire at Burj site

Emergency authorities rushed to Burj Dubai shortly after 10am on Sunday when an explosion rocked the construction area at the base of the world’s tallest freestanding tower.

Fire, police and ambulance officials were on scene within minutes as a black plume of smoke billowed from an open area northeast of the Burj Dubai tower between the Dubai Mall and Emaar offices.

Workers on the site told XPRESS they heard a loud boom and saw black smoke rising from the ground.

A fire, they said, started when an electrical transformer near Gate 4 of the tower apparently malfunctioned and exploded.

The area was cordoned off and the smoke cleared before 1am.

A driver at the scene said, “We heard a huge bang. It was like an explosion. The transformer burst and this led to the fire.”

Another worker on site said, “The electrical transformer caught fire. The electricity for the area has been cut off.”

An employee in one of the site offices said, “The fire took place next to the site office building, very close to Gate 4. The entire area has been cordoned off and we have been prohibited from entering our office.”

A statement is expected from property developers, Emaar, later Sunday. No immediate comment from Civil Defence was available.

Hi to everyone, this is my first post here, although I keep a track of this site for quite some time. My first inquiry is whether or not a documentary is going to cover its construction, for instance "Megastructures" or sth like that.
Damn, it was like yesterday that BD had just 30 floors and I couldn't wait to see how it looked like finished, time really flies.

Indeed, in this rate it will probably burn down before they even finish it :P

Didn't Imre post a picture of some black windows as a result of a fire as well a little while ago?

I say for at least 5 years, 10 or more years won't be a surprise for me.

Wet dreams like 1200m Mile High Tower - Jeddah; 1001m The City Of Silk - Kuwait; 956m Sewun IFC - Seoul won't be build very soon.

Disagree. I think with the current global economic downturn it will be some time before higher towers are built. London's cheesegrater has gone on hold, for instance.

Even if they start digging tomorow, it will take 6 years to complete, so 5 years will be WTB at 818m.

When I was little and a complete skyscraper nut (like I still am) I never could have dreamed of a site like that that allows us to view the construction of all the supertalls in the world.
