The WTC was the world's tallest building for only a year 1972-1973. I am sure the Burj Dubai can retain that title for 10 years. A few of the reasons are that it is built on faster rate (unlike other towers in different regions which have slower construction). Also as mentioned, a tower taller than the burj would have to be in a region with huge percent GDP growth and somewhere where the current recession isnt felt that much (Dubai). So i give the Burj Dubai 10 years of title holder. Nothing will be built taller for 5 years only. 10 is more probable.

It won't be tallest for long, Dubai will have to do better if they want to keep the title at 800 odd metres. Thats still do-able for plenty of cities.

Now 1400m, that's another story

Can't imagine how the new Downtown Dubai will look like (and not as in the render) when it's all build, decorated and the Lake is filled with water.

Well yes you are right, but I meant watching it being constructed in real time (I live in Dubai). But yeah this site offers something almost no other sites do.

we will see. thats if Al burj will be built. its mooted to be 1200-1400m tall. early ground works are currently happening with foundations set for 2009. wont start "growing" probaly 2010 and wont surpass burj Dubai until maybe 2013-15.
so lets just be happy with Burj Dubai for now.

There's roughly 4 skyscrapers proposed to be taller than burj, but all from middle east.

Right now Dubai depends on car but things will change.

Because of suburbia in the USA it is impossible to reach most people with a metro in the suburbs.

The biggest parts of Dubai are build along the SZR and the Creek. The metro will not be far away for most of the people.

check your facts....
as stated earlier dubai will be home to an expected 5 million people at the most. LA has more than 6 million people in its city limits. metro in LA carries more than a million people a day, with double digit growth every month and year. by the time all of dubai is finished you can add another 2-5 million. also with LA having the largest bus system in the world, there is no problem for people to get the metro. as a person that lives car free in LA, its easy and possible. driving a car in LA is becoming more and more of a personal choice rather than a neccesity. with an expanding rail system LA can and will move more people than dubai every will. i doubt the metro will even expand in dubai. seeing as only rich people will be able to live and play there. i've never seen a billionare take the train.

Damn, it was like yesterday that BD had just 30 floors and I couldn't wait to see how it looked like finished, time really flies.
The following documentary, "Big, Bigger, Biggest" is to an extent, directly related to the construction of the Burj Dubai. It covers the history and engineering developments of skyscrapers from the past 40 years or so that led to the current techniques and designs employed today in skyscraper construction. You will like it alot if you haven't seen it before. Plus, the best part of it IMO are the amazing helicopter aerial footage they have of the burj. It makes the Burj appear much taller than we may have seen in photos 'n other vids.
here is the link for part one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfPe9YJTIU4
Parts 2-5 can be found by on under the "related videos" panel in youtube.

cheers

The foundations consists of 192 piles, buried more than 50 m (164 ft) deep.:

By earthquakes, the tower can, at its tallest point, sway a total of 3.35 metres (9.3ft). But there aren't earthquakes in Dubai And if there was a big one, I'm sure the engineers have built the tower strong enough to withstand.
