That depends on which camera you have and which lens on it. With a wide-angle, I think 200 metres is more than enough. For an ordinary camera, you will need to go much further.

Somehow it lacks pics that show how incredible tall the Burj Dubai is. Something like that.

It would be nice, when dubai have a density of buildings like shanghai (in the last pic) - but i think its only a dream...Too much gaps between the buildings...(maybe in Dubai Marina)

I took the picture with a standard 55mm lens. I do not know how far away from the Burj I was, it was on one of the points on the public road where you can get a clear view.

I have more pictures taken at other points and with a 300mm and I will try to post tomorrow if I have time.

I was standing next to the 2IFC and i couldn`t realise how tall it is. I think it will be the same with the Burj Dubai when completed. You will stand there looking up but not get how tall it is.

The only "small" difference is that Burj Dubai´s estimated final height will be twice the height of 2IFC!
