Whenever equipment is lifted using helicoptersl personnel must be on the roof with the equipment is being moved to to insure the equipment is located correct. Obviously there's no place to stand at the top of the spire. Also the sections of the spire are welded together without some fancy cage of some kind the exterior welding of the sections could not be accomplished.

Another point is the crane is probably capable of lifting considerably more weight than a helicopter can. Helicopters are only capable of lifting relatively light objects, that's why they're normally used for HVAC units etc. which which are relatively large in size but light in weight.

Hi all.

Dennis is taking great shots daily - we won't miss a thing. The jacking is going to take 6 or 7 weeks by the schedule.

stefr.

The CN Tower was topped out by a helicopter but the BD will not be. The plans say jacking is going to be the method.

Actually, I was there when this was done. I was living in upstate New York and time and drove over to see the antenna placement.

If you notice there is a scaffold around the antenna below where the top section is and there are two men inside the antenna guiding it into place. The sections are bolted together, not welded like those of this spire. The antenna is also an open lattice so it could be climbed on the inside and the outside. This section being added is also relatively small and light due to the design. Of course obviously this work was done much lower also. Rest assured the spire will not be done by helicopter.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacking

just silly... You better take a look at this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_(device)

With jacking is meant that the spire is pulled or pushed upwards with heavy equipment.
