huh. so i planted that exact skyscraper in the middle of a city, between hills, over the sea, near a harbour: http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/3...jgdynialk4.jpg

in my humble opinion it looks better in the middle of the desert.

although in that particular picture it looks like fallout 3.

anyways, by the time they finish it will be green all around, and soon new skyscrapers will be all around. 70% of all the cranes in the world are in that one city right? so i suppose you could rather say, that the desert around the skyscrapers looks silly, and thus it is about to move out

It looks like the location of the Chicago Spire. But the Burj Dubai only fits in Dubai IMO. I can't think of another place to put it.

It's a skyscraper that needs other skyscrapers to look in place with.

Almost anything that tall would look out of place if there was nothing within 3x the smaller than the height of the Burj Dubai, and or any super tall over 450 meters.

I think the only exception too this rule is Pyramids though they do require a massive base so it actually fixes it's proportion for itself.

but remember that most of the tallest top 10 skyscrapers by 2020 will belong to Dubai, so Burj Dubai wouldn't look so out of place by then.

What Dubai is trying to do will take quite some time. They are attempting to craft the ultimate desert utopia. But, this takes time, and for now, the lonely Burj does look somewhat out of place. But it's always going to be a big mongoloid in the midst of Dubai. That's part of it's charm. Until of course they build these new ones that are taller...

If the spire goes up by 10m per week, then we should be topped out by X-mas ^_^

It's not too rare for tallest building to be lonely. Taipei 101 the current tallest built skyscraper in the world has no mates al all, so too Petronas Tower (maybe they have each other) But the point is that this loneliness can be a good thing, if Burj was surrounded by seven 600m skyscrapers around it, Burj wouldn't look as tall as it is now.

Hi all.

If the old schedule we have still has any bearing, the jacking proceedure should take approx. 6 weeks. It should start within a week (?) so top out would be approx. the second week of December. By the schedule top out was supposed to be middle of September. We are approx. 3 months behind.

I'm hoping to see the top platform get welded on soon but with Imre, OTR, and Dennis all away at the same time -

hey look at ESB. it stuck out like rats testes for years. and now planning authority limit heights around the masterpiece so it will always look tall and a landmark.

Did anyone hear that they will stop construction on the tower because of the credit crunch?

I don know, the crisis is a credit/banking and currency problem (created basicly by greedy bankpractices and easy loans but that neither here nor there), the UAE has huge actual resource and cash reserves, primarily Abu Dhabi but id think Dubai as well.

Their economy is not credit based to the extent that some others have became.

Few believe that Dubai is really in danger of defaulting on its debt. It is, of course, only one of seven emirates in the U.A.E.; vastly wealthier Abu Dhabi or other Gulf countries would almost certainly rescue their neighbor in the event of a crisis. In a proactive move, the U.A.E. recently announced plans to guarantee domestic bank deposits for three years and inject some $30 billion into local banks. As for Dubai, any potential rescue would be relatively inexpensive, considering the hundreds of billions of dollars sloshing around in the region's sovereign wealth funds.

Burj Dubai is probably the last project in the whole city that would go on hold
