This is a little off topic, but I thought it was interesting. Given that Dubai is getting around 8M visitors a year and has a population of 1.4M, the Dubai Mall will need a lot of repeat visitors to meet its 30M visitors per year target. Somebody may have overbuilt just a bit.

Mega doubts as Dubai mall to open amid global crisis
12 hours ago

DUBAI (AFP) — The vast Dubai Mall shopping centre is finally set to open for business on Tuesday but the success of the 20-billion-dollar project is far from certain amid the global economic crisis.

The mall will be one of the world's largest with 1,200 shops, four times as many as the new Westfield centre in London, and it will be a tough call for the owners to meet their target of 30 million visitors in the first year.

"The impact of the financial crisis is being felt everywhere, and that includes the United Arab Emirates, where the appeal of shopping centres could suffer from restrictions imposed by banks on the use of credit cards," said economist Eckart Woertz from the Dubai-based Gulf Research Centre.

In addition, "the purchasing power of the residents of Dubai and Abu Dhabi has dropped in the the past few years due to the surging cost of housing," he told AFP.

Dubai Mall is situated at the foot of the Burj Dubai -- already the tallest building on earth at around 700 meters (yards) and still under construction.

The mall is scheduled to house branches of some of the world's best known retail chains, such as Marks and Spencer, Galeries Lafayette and even Bloomingdales, which has never before had stores outside the United States.

However, the inauguration has been repeatedly delayed. The centre was initially supposed to open by the end of 2006, but the date was postponed to August 2008 and then to October 30 before being put back to November 4.

Local press reported on Thursday that even the new date may not be met due to final-touch glitches.

When it does finally open, many shops will remain shuttered for a long while to come. Bloomingdales is not timetabled to open until 2010 and Galeries Lafayette is earmarked for February next year, according to the mall's website.

Hi Swiddle.

There is room for the entire pinnacle pipe so ?

I agree on the jacking. If it is still going to take 6 weeks they will have to start soon to top out before years end.

I'm confused. I asked if we know how far down the pipe is currently. AltinD mentioned it was possibly 620m. Then I found your good explanation from a while ago:

The lifting equipment is at El. 692m.
The top of the pinnacle right now is approx. 38m. above the lifting point.
So if the entire pipe right down to the base is assembled the base is approx. 105m. below the lifting point.
The top of the concrete is at El. 585m. - 107m. below the lifting point.

To sum it up if the entire pipe is assembled up there right now it extends down to the concrete.

Some shots we have seen show the pipe down to tier 17 or 18 IIRC but none show clearly that it is down to the concrete. There is no way to know if it is all up there and therefore if the jacking will be done in one staged lift or two staged lifts - they will jack approx a tier or 2 at a time regardless to add fins, wings, cladding, etc.

One thing for sure is that there is room (just) for the entire pinnacle pipe right down to its base to be up there right now and therefore the possibility to do the jacking in one staged lift.
Is it still the case that we don't know if the whole pipe is in there? From tThye's photo we can see much of the pipe (blue), and if I understand correctly, the red indicates where the rest could be if there is going to be only one staged lift. Sorry if I've overlooked newer information. I got a few weeks behind on reading posts. It would be cool if there was some kind of frequently updated FAQ page for each thread.

the base of the pinnacle starts at 675m and the lifting equipment starts at 692m
