586m + 15m= 601m.

Ah. Of course. This had occurred to me. So the structure is 601 m in its entirety, but only 586 m are above ground level (which is what will be officially counted). Thanks for pointing that out.

I think the reason they quoted that number is because they were talking about the completion of the concrete section. In that context, the height of the whole concrete structure is more important than the above ground height.

I can't wait for this building to hit 600 mtrs and that will make it the first skyscraper to hit the 600 meter mark. By the way, I noticed that the number of views column can only accomodate 6 digits. So Burj Dubai viewers are showing 267,779 even though it is 1,267,779 or probably 2,267,779.

Actually no that's just the value for this newer thread. I checked out the old huge one in the archives and it had a little over 1,270,000 views. No display problems there!

that is amazing, that is almost twice as tall as the eifel tower. It doesn't look that tall by the way.
Dubai misses the context that make's a building look tall, if this tower stood in London for example then it would look a lot taller.

i dont think theres any "context" on how to make a building look tall, i think the main reasons the burj doesnt look 601m is because none of us have ever seen anything that tall before and also if it was in a dense city you could compare it to other surrounding buildings. with the lake and the other open areas the closest thing to compare it to is the burj hotel which we've all seen is dwarfed by the burj dubai and even the hotel is massive finishing at over 300m!

IMO when someone stands infront of it, this person will quickly forget the words "it doesnt look that tall"!.

And also the further away something is, the smaller it will appear, so 1m ontop of a 600m building will look much smaller than 1m ontop of a 10m building... or am i just being bloody obvious here!

Culwulla, do you have a higher resolution picture of your latest Burj Dubai Detail you could post please? I'm about to start modelling the steel section of my BD model I'm making, it's coming along nicely. Below is a pic of my podium 1 outline

Hooray! Skytower is back with his "GPS information". Looks like everyone can throw away their careful research from the past several weeks.
