BTW, in between your two updates they extended the spire an additional 10 meters, so Burj Dubi 780 meters tall, here we come.

Finally Burj Dubai topped out

http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/8122/iw0ll3copyrj7.jpg

Edit: I made this photo edit assuming the part of the spire above highest steel floor was only 20m, that's why I ended up with a wrong proportion. In reality I guess the spire will end just below where those second group of fins are visible on the left side of the spire

Ok guys, calm down: After doing a checking with documentations also posted in here, the real total height is just 770 meters.

Check the latest picture from OTR:

The top of the half-completed section (starting of Tear 24) is 738.995 meters, and if you check the spire carefully, the part above that is comprised of 2 sections with different diameter. These sections are respectively 9.6 and 21.3 meters tall (not including the rails and beacon lights on top).

So we have: 739 + 9.6 + 21.3 = 770 meters

Wow, that was quick. Are they going to finish the half level sections at this stage or are they going to jack the pinnacle up a little more.

Burj Dubai 770m

if you see the pinnacle door hatch in this pic. thats the highest door at tier27/768m level.
i count 15 flutes above this hatch which are 3.2m apart. or 48m thus 768m+48m=816m.
so you can see how much there is to jack.another 55m in tis pic.

so getting close

The fins and the holes that you see are used to help with the jacking. When the process is completed, the fins will be cut and the holes filled/welded. Then they will probably coat the spire to hide the marks and keep it rust free.

yes altin there are 10 flutes above lev23 tier/739m.
each flute is 3.2m apart,
thus 32m +739m = 771m ;-)
the tier27 door hatch is currently @ 720m high approx.
so another 48m of jacking to go!

I don't like the fins either but I don't think so, this is very likely the finished product what we are seeing here.

I have no problem with the flutes, holes, hatches... I know they wont be visible... But trying to extend that spiral setback design to the spire just doesn't work and looks silly IMO, just accept you reached the end, no more spiral things needed, if they are not there for another purpose like standing against the wind force of course... And I feel like they are added after Adrian Smith left the company...

Thanks for clearing that up Altin, together with Cul's explaination it is all clear for everyone.

Emaar has its reasons for all these holes, unfortunately.

It is part of the design indeed, however it is also needed to prevent the spire from sweeping. Without the fins it would get damaged or even worse.. So if you have to do something, do it (a little bit) in accordance with the initial design.
