Its great to see the pinnacle rising so high so quickly.

Does the rate at which they've been able to lift the spire confirm that most (if not all) of the pinnacle was infact already within the building as we thought?

What I'm wondering is how much your ears would pop if you didn't swallow once while on a journee up in the fast lift! Maybe there going to be airlocked? I remember reading that thats going to be the case in the Nakheel tower, although that itself is going to be another 500 metres odd higher...crazy.

That's my thought too, it's obvious a lot of the spire was already completed as evident by how far they have raised it. Maybe they will know put the rest of it on the bottom at the same time they finish the other half of the top floors. Or maybe it's all there as has been speculated and they're just waiting to finish the jacking.

I highly doubt The elevators will be sealed, that would be very difficult to build and maintain. It would be better and safer for their pressure to equalize as the elevators moved.

Hi B787.

It was all up there. The newest spire jacking plan shows it really good.

Can you please post a copy of the jacking plan? It would be very interesting to see. Thanks!

It is around 1°C less for every 100m height (by the rule of thumb)

Took me quite a few minutes to slowly scroll around the large BD and check out everything from workers to HVAC pipes and all in between.
The great thing about the photosynths is that they do retain the full resolution of each individual picture, so you can zoom in to see the full detail.

To put the single stitched photo that I posted on Tuesday (post 13058) into perspective -

The posted photo is only 841KB, and 1228x6307 pixels, whereas the full size stitched photo is four times the resolution: 2455x12613 pixels.

The large version (not posted) was made from 8 individual photos, each of 2048x3072 pixels, totaling 14.1MB of data.

As you can imagine - the full size version with minimal compression is pretty spectacular. I'm tempted to straighten it out, take out a few of the flares, tidy it up a bit, and get it printed. Not sure what an acceptable pixel density would be for a print, but a six foot high print would work out to around 175 pixels per inch.

Apart from the stitching, no post-processing was performed at all. Equipment used is quite modest - a Canon 300D (I'd love to get a 50D, but can't afford one at the moment!), with a Sigma 70-300mm F4.00-5.6 APO DG.

I'm jealous! Sounds like a cool lens I've got a 18-200mm F3,5-5,6 Nikkor VR lens which I like alot, but when taking pics of BD I'd love to have a 300m.... also mine got f5,6 at 200mm while yours has the same at 300mm... as I said: Jealous!

and one question: A 300mm lens is quite a big thing, I am still a little repelled by the idea of just walking inside The Address with my big camera around my neck. Does the staff even recognize when you walk in with an SLR like that? They obviously really just don't care, do they?

It was only 819 Dhms!

/edit

And to answer your second post,

Someone came up to me when I was taking the outdoor shorts of the Burj and asked if I was taking photos of the hotel. "No - would you like me to?", I asked He said "No - it's not allowed". "No problem then" I smiled at him

Well on wikipedia it said the 'final' height would not be given until completion in september 09, so this is abit of an early time to be telling, although I wouldn't of thought bluffing was allowed, I may be wrong though maybe it is, however I do know that once completed, then it IS not allowed to be built any higher to compete with anything else. Tell you what though, if it DOES stop getting taller now, its going to create one hell of alot less competition for other skyscrapers going up. In faxt I will check wikipedia now to see if this apparent anouncement has been added.
Edit: Just checked wikipedia now, one of the contractors stated only that the final height would be over 700m, others said around 819. We will see soon anyway I guess.

If this was the final hight the Burj would look a little truncated. And the spire would be far too thin IMO

Announced as final height reached by EMAAR, but IMO looking at the transition of the two spire diameters theres more to go, but that was an EMAAR announcement.
