my last diagram for 2008
happy new year!

Id say they would be playing down the actual height this close to the finish so as the make the final height more of a suprise or seem higher than expected.

not a direct support, but as a form of tenacity. How can we be celebrating when our brothers and sisters in Gaza are being mascaraed?

Anyways, when is the opening day for the Burj?

Good for the UAE...not a good thing going on at the strip....hope the cease fire works and peace is brought about...no one needs this conflict right now.

It would be great to see Burj Dubai under fireworks...

I agree. I think it's crap that there won't be any fireworks. If the conflict was in Europe or some other place they wouldn't give a crap. Personally I feel bad for the people on the GAZA "strip" but a New Year is a NEW YEAR, and unless freaking aliens are taking over the Earth, I expect to see New Years celebrated! When 9/11 happened I dont remember people not celebrating New Year. Sheikh Mohammad could have offered financial aid, but not cancel New Year. Huge loss in my opinion!

No, thank you! I always read your posts, but since I have nothing to add, and I didn't want to add to the torrent of "OMG this is amazing!"-posts, I kept silent. But I do appreciate your posts very much, as well as Culwulla's diagrams and the photos posted by OTR, Imre and others! Thank you all and all the best for 2009!

ON THE RISE: The Burj Dubai now stands at 780 metres and nears completion. (Supplied)Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest building has reached a record 780 metres high, Dubai-based Emaar Properties, said on Tuesday.

The building, the centrepiece of Emaar’s $20 billion Downtown Burj Dubai project, now stands at more than 160 storeys tall.

This year, Burj Dubai became the world’s tallest structure surpassing the KVLY-TV mast in North Dakota in the US and the Taipei 101 building in Taiwan.

In 2008 its height also broke the 31-year old record held by the CN Tower, which at 553.33m was the world’s tallest free-standing structure on land since 1976.

“This has been a landmark year for Burj Dubai, as it consolidated its global leading position in the construction of high-rises. Every aspect of Burj Dubai, now, is a world-first, and highlights the new aspects of construction technology employed for the tower,” said Ahmad Al Matrooshi, managing director, UAE for Emaar Properties.

Emaar still refuses to confirm the final height of the tower, but reports have speculated that it is between 700 and 1,000 metres with many suggesting 818 metres.

Last month Marshall Strabala, one of the architects behind the mega-project, who worked as associate partner and lead designer for Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), told Arabian Business that the final height of the building was designed to be 808 metres tall, or half a mile.

Once complete the Burj Dubai will hold the world record in all four categories as recognised by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat - namely, highest structure, roof, antenna and occupied floor.

CULWULLA I think you should send Emaar a mail with your diagram in it to inform them of the actual height of their building And maybe some of Fury’s plans and a couple of photos from Imre for proof.

History continues rising.

How do you know that you (or Fury) are right? Maybe there have been changes in the plans. If the upper Stories is just 10cm shorter then you think that might sum up to 20 meters easily and i don't think you would notice that just from looking photos.

Don't know... I really appreciate your effort but when you post the current height right to the cm it's a bit.. mhh... senseless?!

I'm not a civil engineer but a mechanical one but i know that the tolerances in constructions are in a small cm range. So it just makes no sense to be too exact.

It's like rounding a calculation to 4 digits but then later after the whole process give 8 digits in the result.

With no further height increases expected within the next few hours, and no fireworks at midnight, I guess this is how we will leave it for 2008.

Oh and contrary to previous posts, Im off to bring in the New Year with everything Dubai has to offer minus the fireworks.

Happy New Year to all fellow forumers, see you in 2009
