They really should have made the light beacons a part of the spire, not just placed on top. it doesnt look very good.

Great Updates! I hope for the Maintenance people, they bring a few cases of extra bulbs up now with the cranes. So these guys that will be doing the maintenance don't have to carry them up all those stairs each year when the bulbs need replacing.

Hi all.

Nice updates 234 and Imre.
The bits on the cladding look like lights to me.
There is a hole just below each fin on the pinnacle that I believe will be for lights also - and as Dennis mentioned a while ago for fireworks as well.
Those are BMU's on top of each of the top wings as I mentioned one page ago.

True. Also, because the spire and it's cladding are quite thin, it will have extra lights to make it visible from the ground, especially during night

Hi all

Finally finished my Burj Dubai snow model last night.

It topped out at 2.9m, with a metal spire on top. I was going to make each tier from tier 12 upwards separate from the main structure and add them on, but after about tier 14 I decided no on that and just made the rest pointy. You can see in the pic the bit that was added on top, that was really dodgy putting up, I was on the 5th step of ladders to get it up there. I was going to cut the tier shapes out of the top today and tidy things up a bit but the whole thing collapsed sometime today in the sun, the 3rd collapse (!), I never even got to do the podium, but I did manage to get night pics.

Here's the before and after collapse shots:

Hi Drew

The spire section I added on top was about 100mm or so wide, and 5mm or so for the metal pinnacle on top. Building a snow Burj is hard enough, a sand one would be crazy! Would be a cool 'sandcastle'. The sun melted mine which caused it to collapse, I imagine that could happen too with sand. It would be much easier if you could get a Burj shaped bucket though! lol

well if you build it far enough from the water, it wont wash away till the tide comes in

hahaha, we should file a patent for a burj shaped bucket

Details On Jacking System?

Well I've made myself nuts here for the past hour going through old postings and other websites trying to find details on the spire jacking system but I can't seem to find what I've been wondering about. I remember photos from a few months ago showing those large wheels for cables around tier 17 or so with the jacking system and hoist gear but I can't recall how it works or if that was ever discussed in detail.

Now that we are near the final jacking phase I am wondering just how much the spire with all of the cladding and small wings weighs? That is a LOT of big steel up there now getting pumped up into the sky.

Fury, do you or any of the other structural guys have a clue?

I've gotta believe that hydraulics are involved in some way...either direct hydraulic hoist jacks or hydraulics attached to cables? And just how does the jacking gear attach to the bottom of the spire. When they are finished are they going to abandon it in place or dismantle it and get it down then fill in those floors where the spire used to be?

Curious in Phoenix.
