Thats a good one

Took the family out to Dubai Mall today (more pics in that thread)

I was already wondering the other day: Whats that black dirt up there? Did something catch on fire? Now that I took a pic of the said section of BD and being the super Sherlock guy that I am I figured its probably from the crane's exhaust over all these years That might be a tough job for the BMU

Large version http://www.quetschluft.de/dubai/DSC_0263_q.jpg

Just joking, let them have their lunch break

I can understand climbing apartment buildings (with balconies), but not buildings like these, especially when the height of one floor alone is much higher.

I fell from about 45 ft up (this was when I was in high schoool about 10 years ago)... yes the rose bushes sucked but the soft soil all around (which was just recently watered) broke my fall. I had soo many thorns in my arms, neck, shoulders, and a few on my forehead to boot!

Yes, once upon a time I was a dumbass teenager!

People who are able to climb skyscrapers, have some really big balls though... 30ft up is enough for vertigo to strike when you are clinging to the side of a building.. I couldnt imagine clinging to the burj hundreds of meters up

Aren't the cranes electric. Electricity powering the pulley systems and hydraulics is very common among many types of cranes. You need an exhaust when there is an internal combustion. You are suggesting the cranes run on petrol? Refueling would be a logistical nightmare. Using a power cable seems a lot easier.

I thought that black soot was from a fire. It was mentioned awhile back that there were a couple of fires in the Burj.

They work so hard for so little.

...

And yet I can imagine the supervisor looking at his watch while they earn some well deserved rest. : P

Ok, possible I was not very serious about my Sherlock abilities. I haven't heard about fires before so that was my guess (also I honestly dont know very much about large construction sites, I am learning it all from here)

Must have been quite some smoke, its really ugly. Once you realise its not shadows or reflections you can't ignore it anymore.

Yes, I also read a long time ago that it was a fire near/at the crane last summer.

Could it be from a generator sitting on the tier? Used to power drills, lights etc. ?

Was outside, not in BD.
I think it should be a smoke from generator.
