I stand corrected. You're absolutely right of course - the water doesn't move. I was clearly on some kind of drugs when I was there, and shamefully own up to having spent countless hours in Photoshop doctoring the pictures I took.

What an absolute tool I am.

Uh-oh. Looks like Imre has been doctoring his photo's too.

Nice mega update Imre!

Nice to see lake filled and testing of the fountain under way. But what a pity to see so small progress at the cladding and at the roof of BD.

Today in the Belgian newspapers: "Exodus of Dubai: The fall of a paradise"

A whole article about the economics of the emirate which stagnates because of the crisis.

Ooh. Stagnating Dubai, or a booming Belgium.

Tough choice

Belgium isn't booming. But I found it an alarming article. Half of all building projects (good enough for 450 billion euro) are on hold or are cancelled. Nakheel's next world tallest building is on hold, plans for the skyscraper hotel of Donald Trump of 465 million euro is cancelled.

500 employees are fired, and the plans for the islands are reduced to minimize costs.

Emaar lost only in the last quarter of 2008 already 373 million euro, that means a loss of 55 percent on year base. That's why all planned projects are cancelled or on hold.

On the national airport thousands of cars are left behind by the expats, some still with the keys on it. Because you risk jail when you don't pay your bills, people try to escape the emirate.

Employees with out work (mostly Indians) need to leave Dubai in 30 days when they got no job. These workes only worked for 55 euro/month, some say they were handled as slaves.

Khalfan al-Kaabi said that almost 45 percent of all employees in the estate market will lose their jobs.

1,5 million Indians are working in Dubai. Only for next month already, 20,000 seats on the airplanes are booked back to India.

--

Dubai itself will give fines up to 211,000 euro to companies or persons which blame the bad economy of Dubai.

--

Prices of apartments lowered with a stunning 25 percent. A popular one-room apartment in Downtown Dubai costed approximately 18.6 million euro, now 'only' 10.8 million euro.

The value of a villa on Palm Jumeirah lowered with 60 percent in only one month.

Analysts suspect a decrease of the value of all the estate in Dubai of 50 percent.

--

Shopping malls stay empty, taxi drivers driving along town without passengers, no tourists.

--

What's next? Probably Abu Dhabi will give Dubai a little help to survive this crisis.

All this is according to the Belgian articles in the newspapers. I don't know if they are exaggerating, but it doesn't look very good for Dubai for the next months.
