The Burj is gorgeous, but the rest of Dubai is just miserable. Sand, skyscrapers, highways. That's it. Instant city, add people. Probably the worst kind of westernization you can imagine.

I think you can compare the Burj to the City: New, daring, exciting, unusual and a world first.
We are all privileged to be able to see both the tower and city evolve before our eyes. Never before has a city or construction of the scale we see happened so quickly. Sure, we are all going to take differing points of view to the city and the Burj some aspects are better than others, but the ambition is there which is fantastic and this website is here to discuss that. At the end of the day, all cities were new once and all have had their ups and downs, good/bad planning decisions, good/bad politics.

So it doesn't matter there is not a long lasting history to this Metropolis, we are watching another part of history being made it is good to express opinions, because afterall that's what makes history.

However, all opinions need an arguement and I'm getting fed up with pointless one liners where people say "I hate this", "no your wrong, I'm right" that is never going to create an interesting valued discussion, only going to create conflict. So let's stop wasting time and watch "History Rising" and continue with some balanced discussion.

So...

Aren’t they falling behind schedule on the Burj’s construction? The top hasn't changed much. Not a lot of glass has made its way up as well. Nearing the end of February and it seems not much progress has been made on the outside since top out. True the entrance looks almost done, the surrounding structure is being built, probably the interior, but if they are targeting the 9.09 they’ll have to up the pace.

What do you Dubai dwellers think? Am I right or observing the construction from my humble capital has misled me.

Youre looking at it from a typical Euro perspective (even if youre not european). Dubai aims to MODERNIZE, its aim is not to WESTERNIZE. The former builds infrastructure, the latter builds a society. Its sad that modern infrastructure has so far been associated with only the West, but that has now changed. A society can modernize without westernizing, although Dubai could do well with some Western concepts.

I actually like sand, skyscrapers, and highways, but you're right about the instant city comment - although it takes time to build a world class city and we should give it more time.

even if the city is built overnight, the urban attitude comes with time, and you need a certain urban mentality to be a worldclass city. Unfortunately, Dubai has made huge mistakes that I dont think can be fixed, but Abu Dhabi has a great plan down and i'm pinning a lot of hopes on them.... but thats another issue.

Shenzhen China continues to grow at a faster rate than Dubai, and only started to do so in the mid 80's. Riyadh sort of popped up overnight as well, but without huge skyscrapers. So, this sort of growth has actually happened before.

That's actually pretty good.

CAN WE PLEASE stop with the editorials on urbanization or urban issues? Honestly, some of us who actually are a bit more educated in that department can find far better arguments for and against Dubai written by scholars, and not some random low post-count people on skyscraper boards. Most of us don't care what others think on those issues anyway, we are purely here for information and data on a specific skyscraper and fountain.

If any of you were really worth listening to, you'd be published, and you could reference a book or two of yours. CONTRIBUTE PROPERLY!!!

I still cannot imagine it - the highest building which seen in my life is Eiffel tower, and Burj Duai is almost 2,5x higher. Unbelievable

Imre, what's going on right now BJ?
We do not see any significant progress of cladding and particularly cladding of the spire in the last two weeks. Do you have any info?

Cheers!

If this tower were built at sea level in Cardiff the top would be higher than any of the Brecon Beacons or Black Mountains.

Are those extremities reserved for observation decks, or what are they?
