Have we gained a crane? Looking at this picture there appears to be three cranes near the top of the building, the main tower crane that has been there for awhile, another one on the left side of the picture and another one a little lower with the boom sticking out on the right side below the main crane. I know one of these is the recovery crane but what is the other one and when was it installed?

I assume you have a "normal" SLR and not one with full format sensor (such as Nikon D700 or D3 or some high-end aequivalent from Canon). I got a D300 with "normal" sensor size which always has a crop factor of 1.5 times the focal length compared to full format. To get it short: If you have a full format camera / lens it will fit from Souk Al Bahar bridge with 24mm, otherwise not You'd probably have to maintain a distance of some 500m or so.
My 10mm fisheye makes the Burj look chubby
My brother visited last week and he has a normal 11mm lens without much optical distortion. He was able to fit the Burj from Bahar bridge in landscape format

Hey Desert Diver, thanks for the reply on that. Actually I'm running with both a 10D (cropped sensor) and a newer Mark II (full frame sensor) with a 50 prime and a 24-105 L). Guess I can fit it in from that bridge then. Oh well, whenever I do go to Dubai, I should have plenty of time to figure out my vantage points

The reflections in a sunny day make the tower look really beautiful and emphasize its futuristic look...

Could it be the same crane that use to be at a lower level (assuming it isn't still there)? See the one on the left in this photo from December:

La structure est trop grande c'est dommage on peut pas savourer la beauté du monument que c'est devenu au fur et à mesure de sa contruction!

Hi all.

As Swiddle posted it does look like the third crane is the same one that was setup half way up the structure. Perhaps they will be using it for cladding installation. I wonder if it will also be used as recovery crane #3 - it may be small enough for it's disassembled pieces to fit in an elevator (?) - not sure.

Another great update Imre.

I finally ordered Adrian Smith's book on (among other buildings) the BD. Reviews online and from Helghast are very good. I was trying to get a scanned copy on Emule for the last year for free but alas, it is not popular enough to be on there - what is wrong with the general public ?!?
