If the pyramids of Giza are any indication, I think modern skyscrapers will last a very long time. Of course, practical concerns will probably force us to demolish many skyscrapers long before their physical lifetimes run out. As our technology and knowledge advances, we create safer buildings and it gets more and more expensive to renovate old skyscrapers to bring them up to standard.

You need to remember that weapons have become much more powerful than they were thousands of years ago. Nukes, for instance, have only been around for a few decades, and they have been in the hands of a small number of people. Nuclear weapons continue to proliferate.

If humans had nuclear weapons starting in 2000 b.c., the pyramids would not be there anymore. I put the chances of Burj Dubai still existing in the year 3000 at about 5-10%

............. Ooooooo K ................

Hi all.

Smith's book was delivered today - impressive.

A very good read on all of Smith's work - great drawings throughout.

Good info on the design and revisions of the BD. One thing that I really noticed is the interior designs and fitout are .... fantastic. Extremely high end - almost opulent (in a good way). The structure and exterior look great and the interior will match. This thing is architectural porn inside and out and should be on every skyscraper lovers "things to see before I die" list.

So, when will the UAE get bombed?

Great work! Were you doing this for some sort of project or just a hobby? The detail is incredible.

I don't know for the Burj.
In engineering, they choose a lifetime and than put a safetyfactor on it. Along the codes in Europe, the lifetime is predicted on 100 years for a 'monumental construction'. 50 year for a building.
BUT: lifetime in engineering has nothing to do with the LIFE of a construction. It's just a matter of choosing good safety factors and the forces.

But the real lifetime is not known. It depends on the maintenance, ...

Cool

Just use another tag to embed videos: ([yt][/yt] (for Youtube) and not an image tag: [img][/img]

[yt]j3B2KRj844w[/yt]

Edit: Uh, sorry, "yt" tag doesn't work, anyone knows the right tag for this board?

Actually if you look closely, the facade detailings are very similar to the Petronas Twin Tower by Pelli...

i've seen other dubai projects going on as well..oh. my. god. wow. what a city this will be. right now its going through the process of building itself, comparable to say nyc in the early 20th, when they were building empire state and chrysler. give dubai time - no doubt by the end of the century, dubai will be the skyscraper king of the world, if not some other asian city.

i love the projects going on in dubai. its artistic, original and exciting.

my question is..

does anyone have any renderings of what dubai would look like after all current projects are completed? i bet it would make for a great picture, thanks

i have been a fan of Burj Dubai since the start and i have been watching this forum for the past 5 years reading about the progress of this burj....

as part of my masters degree in engineering in one of the subjects i had a choice to select a subject to do some simulations on it. I have choosen Burj Dubai Elevator system for the simulation.

I will be using a generic simulation software to build a model for the Elevator system at burj dubai and i needed some information on the elevator configuration they will be using at the Burj, i hope someone from this forum would help me to find this information.

Am not expected to get information about the mechanics but more on the overall configuration and Control part.

Anyone who could help me in this Please
