Dubai is building skyscrapers for fun, because they like spend money on tall buildings (I think that governments all over the world are subsidizing skyscraper construction, especially in asia). It is not economical to build skyscrapers on areas with rural population density. Dubai is a city with a GDP of 50 billion dollars, my city, Porto Alegre, Brazil, has a GDP of 44 billion dollars, the tallest building in Porto Alegre has 106 meters.
Porto Alegre is not a good comparison. It is not a beach or touristic city. In Vitória (Brazil) the persons prefer to live front the beach. Tall buildings did not proliferete because of the municipal laws. But created a wall of buildings in the permitted limit. Without limit, we would have tall buildings.

Another example? Surfers Paradise (Q1)

Here is the one - I added labels to a Doka drawing. A couple of things on it are not innacurate, but are named differently now.

What I do find disturbing is he is selling the model for 149 bucks and is stating it was made from original blueprints and drawings that he more than likely got from us. While the info and plans are in the public domain I feel some of us on here should be entitled to royalties ...

Seriously He is looking for trouble stating the plans and blueprints thing. Emaar won't even allow this stuff on websites without threatening lawsuits ..... the frick.., frack ... sons a bi .... motherf..... - ahem - sorry, I digress.

Hi all.

There's at least two small cranes in addition to the main one up there - are these the recovery cranes used to take the big one down, or are they needed to help with the cladding, or any other remaining work.

Also, there is the crane at level 99.

As I understand it, no occupancy could be started as long as there are any cranes on the building.

Can someone who knows bring us up to date - thank you.
There is still 2 sections of the second larger wing of tier 22 left to erect. Also there is still the 2 half wings for tier 22 to be attached to the pinnacle pipe. Other than that there is just cladding to lift up and the materials for the roofing of the multiple terraces up there. As for the smaller cranes I think they could be used for both cladding and recovery. I'm sure the crane disassembly proceedure will be done long before the soft opening on 09 09 09.

As a 12 storey building, it would need either more elevators or faster elevators than the 7-storey version. These would need to have been provided for earlier in the design-build process.

Same goes for HVAC, electrical systems, evacuation capacities, etc etc.

Was the building designed for 12 floors, with a plan to build 7 at first, and add the rest later - and later became now ?

Also why would this be happening at the present time while many other projects in the region are being delayed or cancelled for economic reasons ?

Who or what is driving these events ?

Thanks
The office annex was pretty much completed - roof and all - before they put up 2 cranes and started adding to it some months ago. The plan up untill then was for 7 levels. The addition must have been a last minute thing IMO. I think they must need more room despite the economic issue. They are probably willing to put money into the BD being it is so far along and the fact it will be a major draw to the apartments and villas in the buildings surrounding it.

There is all kinds of numbers out there perhaps because of the multiple revisions. As far as I can tell from my info (and it could very well be innacurate)
- 334,000m2 for the tower proper
- 517,000m2 including the podium

I posted a link to your querry from a few days ago. You should probably read it ......

I'm not trying to be a dickhead but you should read through the posts since your last post when you come here. The article is very informative.

Hi highrise.

Read back - the link is there.

I haven't heard of anything blowing off the structure.

True there is no netting now but there has been throughout the construction.

I believe there has been 2 worker deaths:
1 fell to a lower terrace
1 was crushed down on the podium

The last shot of the safety sign is from Imre on 08 04 23 showing 7093 workers and 39.2 million manhours with 5 lost time accidents (I don't think this counts the 2 deaths).
That is 3.4 million more than a month earlier and 20.2 million more than a year earlier.
Therefore my guess is we are at ~55 million manhours if the work force is near the same. There is most likely more workers now so I am being conservative. Also this is not counting the manhours from before the Samsung, Besix, and Arabtec joint venture started on the structure which was after Bauer and Arabian foundations finished the raft.

My point is although any deaths are not a good thing the project has a pretty good safety record.

maybe better close up, but the old one looks so out of porportion from distance, the new one is perfectly proportional.

Nice video but the fountain sequence is still a big mess, hope it is just testing. Appears that they need to send the operator/sequence programmers to Las Vegas for training.

The fountain is already make a lot of noise when it blows the water very heigh (in these test videos), so I'm wondering how loud it will be when it blows hundred meters.

It is still just testing. Will be for some time.

The operators/sequencers don't need to go to Vegas to train, because they created the show at the Bellagio.

Just be patient. When it's time to "go live", we'll all be told about it. Until then, everything you see is just testing.
