Dubai would have had it's annual average rainfall in that storm!

P.S. Love those lightning pics!

HELPING mother earth!?!? i hope youre joking.

sure planting a couple thousand trees is nice (in an insignificant way), but the dubai palm islands have destroyed the marine ecosystem. god knows how much sediment they turned up building them, which gets caught in the regional currents...

lets just stick to saying dubai is a fantastic example of human capability - the burj looks sweet!

I've got to agree here. Not to mention the fact that the majority of the water used to irrigate these massive swaths of desert is in fact desalinated at much capital and energy expense! Dubai in NO WAY helps mother earth!

and its the most wasteful according to its GDP

Yeah, sorry "DBXQuantum", i realized your comment was sarcastic. I should have quoted "sdblackshade", who my comment was directed towards. Youre totally right, there is NO WAY Dubai is the greenest city. Closer to the opposite id say.

I'm sure all the people living in places burried in snow for most of the winter are the greenest places around, right?

But hey, afterall they don't use energy for cooling so that statement must be true.

Pffffff .... gimme a break

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they use water that has already been used by people so that there's no need to go through the desalination process again. Obviously it'd have to be cleaned but I don't think they desalinate water for watering plants.

It's funny how none of the people bickering back-and-forth over the environmental/water usage in Dubai have provided one credible source to support their viewpoints.

Here's one: http://www.newsweek.com/id/143689
In Dubai, entertainment trumps the environment everywhere you turn, imitating it and reconstituting it. On the inland edge of Dubai a stupendous theme park and resort complex now under construction advertises itself as 186 million square meters "encompassing the entire spectrum of human experience." A promotional video calls it "a fantasy land set right in the heart of the desert." Yet there's going to be water everywhere: seawater made potable by enormous oil- and gas-burning plants that already have an installed capacity of 1.26 billion liters a day.

For watering and gardening the landscaped areas, is used ONLY treated sewage water.

Desalinated water is used for the tap water (not drinkable) and for the huge aluminum swelter complex (DUBAL), which disposable water is then treated and bottled as drinkable water for the masses (from 2L PET bottles to mostly 19L containers for the water coolers). Of course there is also natural mineral spring water (Masafi) consumed in mass by the people in 0.5L and 1.5L PET bottles.
